Additionally, the government recognizes the cultural value that the beliefs and practices that the Ultimo community hold, enabling the protection of the cultural heritage of the community. This paper explores the community’s indigenous culture and the influence it has on the people of the local area of Ultimo. Ultimo, City of Sydney History of the Area Located 2 kilometers south-west of Sydney CBD, Ultimo is a suburb under the local government area of the City of Sydney. The name ultimo originated from the estate of Dr. John Harris acquired from Governor King in 1803. The Gadigal aboriginals took great care of their environment to ensure that they had a steady supply of food like wild yams. The Gadigal people are a part of the Eora Nation, which comprises 29 other clan groups of the Sydney Metropolitan area.

The indigenous people in Ultimo lived in the bush and made their living through hunting and gathering. They also portrayed expertise in seeking water. They had skills that they used to grow plants loved by the game they hunted. Because of this belief, the aboriginals in Ultimo do not regard humans to be higher than other forms of nature. Languages The aboriginals in the City of Sydney use the Gadigal language, which is partly used in naming streets and landmarks. Most of the places in Sydney had aboriginal names. However, after British intrusion, the names were dropped in favor of European names. Apart from the spoken languages, the aboriginal people in Ultimo also used traditional hand signs languages. They hold the cultural heritage of the aboriginal people and carry a relationship between people and the environment.

The Ultimo Heritage Conservation Area is such a significant site in the ultimo suburb. Its significance is traced back to the subdivision of Harris and Macarthur Estates. It contains a combination of Victorian residential, commercial, and institutional development. The buildings in this conservation area are a public image of the area, highly valued by the local community. Additionally, there are shells, bones, and feathers embedded in the wood and metal poles to signify the indigenous ways of the aboriginals before 1788. Events of historical significance The aboriginal people of Ultimo have a rich history commemorated by various days set aside by the Council of South Sydney. The events that the aboriginals mark in Ultimo are shared among other aboriginals across Australia. The invasion by the British is commemorated on 26 January.

On tenth June 1838, the Myall Massacre happened in which many Aboriginal people lost their lives. Since the British settlers’ invasion of an ultimo suburb in 1788, there was forced assimilation of the ultimo aboriginals in which they joined the white communities in the area. The forced assimilation led to the economic marginalization of the aboriginals while new diseases affected them. The smallpox epidemic in 1789 claimed almost half of the aboriginal population in the city of Sydney. The result if this was extreme depopulation of the aboriginals and a threat of becoming extinct. The aboriginal people in City of Sydney aged over 15 years that have completed 12-year schooling or equivalent comprise 46 percent. The aboriginal population that attends an educational institution in the City of Sydney comprises 30 percent of the population. Indigenous services like land council, health services, jousting, employment aim to support the aboriginal people by offering safe space for indigenous people to explore identity and knowledge.
