Women with Disabilities
This study will bring to light the various attitudes that the general public have on people with disabilities especially in dealing with women with disabilities. Some of the communities in Brooklyn are disadvantaged, and they either face poverty or high crime rate. Organizations have been present in such areas and have been trying to remedy the community by finding ways to improve their living conditions. CORE Service Group is one of the organizations that have worked with communities in Brooklyn. Introduction This is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that was founded in the year 2005, and their main headquarters is in the United States, Brooklyn, New York. They draw its team from members of the community that they serve and also clients that have improved their way of life so they can be a testament to those that they want to help.
Amongst the vulnerable group, CORE has been keen on women and especially those with disabilities. Peoples with disabilities do come from all in that they could be young or old, male or female, from different ethnic backgrounds and even from different levels of household income. Over the years there has been little attention given to women with disabilities in that they were grouped the same with their male counterparts even though they face more hardships that their opposites. Through the years there has been the assumption that the policies and programs that are prepared for people with disabilities are supposed to be gender neutral. There are different kinds of books that will help us understand more about the lives of women with disabilities and what they go through.
All research that has been done take gender to be irrelevant they will also not consider their social status, race, ethnic background, and their sexual orientation and preference. Asch & fine, 1988:3 states that having a disability will shadow any other disadvantage or right that a person’s is denied. There has always been a focus on disability as it s on its own and there has never been consideration on the way that it will affect [people of different social backgrounds differently. Studies on disability have been blind to gender and have been general to al those that have been disadvantaged by it. The main role for any organization in this sector is to be the voice for the vulnerable, learn and identify needs, ensure that there is public awareness, advocating and fighting for change on how they are treated that is fight discrimination and oppression.
CORE having been formed in 2005 has been dealing with the vulnerable group which included runaways, single parents and homeless. This has helped the organization reach the clients that they felt most required their help in improving their way of livelihood. This categorization was generalized in that CORE has helped those from abusive homes, rape victims and to some extreme rehabilitated gang members and drug addicts. The organization members are made up of former clients and members of the society that they help therefore they know of the struggles that they face and are in an easier position to help the community. They will be the face for them as they tackle the government and other service providers for equal recognition in employment opportunities, health services, and better living and not be beggars looking for handouts in their own country.
Working with the department of health, CORE will reach more people and ensure that they will get the required help from the government and thus unburden their families. The CORE has been participating in marches for women and open forums that have been the best platform where they have voicing their issues. On January 20, 2017, CORE held a women's march where women came together to let their voices be heard on human, social and economic justice. Events such as this have been efficient in creating awareness on what women are facing and will be effective for those women with disabilities in that they will get a chance to join their counterparts and get to voice their issues. It's however impotent that for newcomers to take to heart our ethical culture.
As like in any community-based organization unethical behavior is not tolerated and CORE prides itself in the way we handle our clients and the accomplishments we have so far achieved. Accountability: there are up to six principles that guide our accountability framework, and they include: 1. Organizational responsibilities 2. Corporate goals 3. CORE Program and Services The CORE has undertaken various programs with the aim to improve the lives of their clients. They include: 1. Residential re-entry center and alternative-to-incarceration CORE residential re-entry center is based in Brooklyn. It has up to 161 beds as by the end of 2017 and serves federal offenders in New York's Eastern District. This facility is for all genders, and its residents are not discriminated upon. This is meant for them to regain a healthy lifestyle and goals.
The staff will be responsible for assisting its residents to gain back good health and behaviors to be independent and contributing members of the society. New heights transitional residence: this is meant for the homeless and couples. With the help of CORE, residents will have a chance to regain stability and secure permanent shelter. The Bronx scatter site emergency housing: these are an apartment that is in Bronx that is owned by the CORE. Hotel residence no. 1: houses 110 single adult men as they transition to permanent living, Hotel residence no. 2: has 88 beds for single adult men funded by the New York City. Hotel residence no. 3 and 4: number 3 is for men who are aged 65 has 98 beds and older whereas number 4 is for single men of any age has 116 beds.
Some might have been exposed to the education systems and can defend themselves, but a larger number will not have these benefits. CORE believes that if this part of the population if given a chance they too can be contributing members of the community. This work should not necessarily mean a paying job but can also be volunteer work, supporting other by enjoining them with the CORE team and having them being active and engaged in the day to day business of the community. If this part of the society is left alone, they will consume a considerable amount of resources due to the lack of employment and the kind of needs that they require to go about their day to day duties.
It’s therefore important for any community to ensure that they have supported the disabled in the society since there are economic, social and psychological effects for the rest in the community. This can as well be viewed as a methodology of keeping track on the community and knowing how best to improve their health conditions. Importance of A Needs Assessment It’s essential and will make the undertakings of CORE or any other organization that wants to help the disabled access those in need in an efficient way. Importance of needs assessment includes: • To establish the number of people living with disabilities in the community • To access the gender of those living either disability and establishing the need for immediate help if needed.
• To differentiate and define the disability, ill health or impairment. • To establish, identify and close the gap between those that are in need and CORE • To identify the services that are available for those with disabilities • Build a relationship between the government, CORE and members of the society that are affected by disability. Furthermore, CORE can ensure that they have included women with disabilities in their staff to ensure that they will be the best role models for those that they intend to add as their clients especially young girls. General accessibility: this is the policies, communication, and physical access. The CORE should be prepared to use venues that are easily accessible and use of alternative print media like Braille, large print, audio just to name a few.
This will depend on kind of disability that the women face since they are not the same. The CORE should also ensure that the information is in a format that readily available and easily accessible. Therefore they saw the need to ensure that they will handle issues of women with disabilities differently with that of women who have none. Even though the CORE is based in the US, they also face challenges in working with women with disabilities especially if do not get the support from governmental departments that are responsible for these communities. It’s therefore evident that poverty, unemployment, low-income households and people with and negative attitudes affect the treatment of women with disabilities. This is mainly because a majority of the disabled are unemployed and this is the reason CORE has stepped in to end and improve the lives of the disabled woman considering the achievement they have had with their organization in helping the needy.
