Yalta Conference in 1945 Research
Document Type:Research Paper
Subject Area:History
It is important to note that, the United States of America presence in the international politics was a major force that was to be reckoned and this was one of the major reasons for holding the Yalta conference that took place close to the end of the 20thcentury(Davis 1974). This research paper seeks to critically investigate and discuss the statuses of the east and west before, during, and after the Yalta Conference that significantly is associated with the Global Cold War as clearly outlined by the various thoughts and views of defenders and the revisionists. Further the study will provide the cause, the alignment, and the long term effects of the Global Cold war. Due to different ideologies between these great powers, there has been division of domestic and international politics and policies, splitting the world into politics and military power.
The conflicting interests by Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin on the postwar economic assistance for USSR, British recognition of the Soviet sphere in the eastern Europe, protection of the British Empire, clarity on the postwar status of Germany, consensus on the establishment of the United Nations, and gaining the Soviet agreement to intrude the war against Japan gave birth to war that was to last more than 50 years. As shown in numerous accounts by defenders and revisionists, many historical reports and researches have suggested that the global Cold War began in Europe due to the diversified interests by the various super power countries and extended to the third world countries such Asia, Africa, and the Latin America. It is important to note that, both the United States and the Soviet Union claimed impressive anticolonial credentials and as they increased their colonies, they could bump into each other which resulted to serious confrontation.
The reaction or fight back or interventions in Asia, Africa, and the Latin America resulted to accentuation of local quarrels which had dismal ramification for all. From the well observed and researched accounts by (Leffler & Painter 2005), it is clear that there were prominent conflicts that needed to be resolved if peace and international unity was anything to appreciate. Ideally, those that suffered the most were not the starters of the war but the neighboring countries that acted as colonies of the super power nations (Leffler 1994). Some of the main perspectives and disciplines that have been outlined or that are associated to the birth of the Cold War are the differing Soviet and United States ideologies, revolution and power of competing models of development, their political interests and the interventions that came as a result of insurrection, and rebellion.
Other reports suggests that, the systems of support, subversion, military and machineries played a key role in determining the outcome of the war. Some historians and other philosophical researchers note that, by the time the conference was being held, the war between countries in Europe was coming to an end, with the combined powers closing in on the Nazi regime of Germany, but this was not to be the case. The awkward alliance with the Nazi Germany by the Soviet Union was nearly obliterated by the constant and dangerous Luftwaffe raids, and in which the United States had refused to join the war effort until it was very late. It is noted that, after the Soviet Union made another prominent move and joining hands with the Allied powers and consequently achieving a number of key victories, the European war was slowly and completely coming to an end.
It was further consented that, The Big Three had no responsibility or duty towards the Germany after the war except for cases where minimum substance help was deemed necessary. It is in the meeting where the Germany military industry would be abolished and that, the major war criminals would be tried and subjected to trials before the international court of Nuremberg, Germany. The meeting presented and discussed in length when the Soviet Union or forces were to be enjoined in the battles that were happening in the Pacific theatre. There were still unanswered questions on what to be done with the nations or states that had been set free in the Eastern part of Europe. The soviet forces were supposed to provide help in setting up non-permanent governments in the east side and help the people with the establishment of free and fair elections and also the creation of democratic institutions (Sulzberger 1982).
Some of the controversies that were not resolved during the World War II hinted to the Global World War that took place moments after the World War Two ended. Stalin held to believe that, there was need for economic assistance for Russia, and that the United Kingdom and United States of America were to recognize the Soviet Sphere of influence in the eastern part of Europe. On the other hand, Franklin Roosevelt wanted a consensus to be reached on the establishment of the United Nations and be given the opportunity to join the war against Japan upon the defeat of the famous Hitler. In the place of the Winston Churchill, he wanted or pleaded for the protection of the British Empire and clarity on the postwar status of Germany. It is due to these issues that no one worked out of the Yalta Conference satisfied and this was the beginning of the Global Cold War (Snell 1956) RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The study exclusively relied on the use of secondary data towards driving its objectives.
But with serious cold fight that prevailed, the representative from the U. S found that, they could do nothing now that the Soviet Union and military was occupying Poland (Ghere 2010). a good one, but put Chicago citation please) Immediately after the Yalta Conference, the Global Cold War becomes a reality with Franklin Roosevelt receiving a lot of critics for giving up on issues that should have been settled otherwise. People felt that, the foreign policy by Roosevelt was not appropriate and people accused him of selling out at the Yalta Conference and naively letting Soviet Union representative have his way. It ought to be understood that, Roosevelt was resolving to use diplomatic approach to solving the problem that engulfed Germany-Poland by securing Russian participation, establishment of the basic guiding principles of the United Nations, and with maintenance of the Grand Alliance but this was not to be as he suffered sudden stroke and died.
Despite the end of the Global Cold War, spending and military developments are still happening particularly in the deployment of nuclear fitted ballistic defensive systems and missiles. The tensions that were experienced during the Cold War period cannot easily be erased as many of the economic and social systems that were exploited and that led to fueling of the cold war competition in the third world countries remain acute (Omel'chuk and Iurchenko 2002). Very good, but where is the Chicago citation) It is evident that, there were so many conflicting grounds with some paradoxes, juxtapositions and contradictions coming to play. With the revisionists arguing that The Yalta Conference was typically democratic among The Big Three with every individual representative getting their chance to present and air their views and policies, to defenders this did not form a major subject of discussion and blamed the Soviet Union for the outbreak of the Global Cold war.
In personal account of the above claims, it is important to note that, the matters presented in the conference were sophisticated and unique and that seven days were not enough to underscore all the matters and this forms the major reason as to why the Global Cold War was inevitable. The defenders maintained that the issue of liberalism and capitalism was to be entrenched and allowed to prevail in the whole world but the revisionists challenged the US policies by saying that the European interests have been neglected (Soward 1950). It is evident that, since the Yalta conference happened, a lot of improvement is eminent but there are some sections that have not been well illuminated. There still exist some serious push and pull between The Big Three for instance, the conflicting interest between US and Russia concerning the nuclear weapon and defensive systems that are being lounged and modified every other year.
This implies that, there is no clear illustration on whether the conference provided some guidelines on the same and hence this can be left for future research.
