Alternatives to Incarceration of Drug Offenders

Statistics from the Bureau of Justice shows that more than half of federal prisons contain drug-related criminals. The rise in the number of those incarcerated for drug offenses is due to the recent war on drugs and the rise of prohibited activities. Besides, it is also a result of the lengthy sentences for drug criminals as well as the arrest of large numbers of low-level drug-related criminals. Based on these statistics, it is imperative to come up with alternative ways to solve drug-related crimes. The common alternatives to incarnation are drug courts, progressive sanctions, and treatment programs. Moreover, the drug courts put more emphasis on rehabilitation rather than punishment. However, the system sends offenders who fail to observe the rules of the programs back to jails.
