Abstract : Obesity presents as a major epidemic and poses as a risk factor for other health conditions. It is a crucial subject because of the massive increase in the number of diseases caused by obesity in recent years (James, et al. Moreover, the ignorance of the health information that should be followed by people in their diet to reduce this dangerous disease poses as a threat to many around the world. Moreover, the researcher has selected this topic because of its importance on the personal level as well as due to the students’ life style and the consequences, which leads to the neglect of a healthy diet and thus obesity.

As defined, obesity is an unusual or extreme buildup of fat that may weaken health, and is a lifelong disease that is increasing ubiquitously (Poza & Isodari, 2017). Furthermore, referring to recent studies, some figures show that 191 countries involved in the sub regional groupings have formed by the found newborn death rates and life expectancies of the different countries (James, et al. What is the level of KICL students’ awareness of following a healthy diet? 3. Literature Review Numerous studies are relevant to the topic of obesity; the researcher has found many related reports of obesity definitions and causes of this epidemic, which is to be illustrated by some authors. Obesity is defined as an unusual or extreme growth of fat that may weaken health, and it is a lifetime disease that is rising in predominance (Poza & Isodari, 2017).

Poza & Isodari, further illustrated in 2017 that obesity is no longer considered as a disorder of the adult since obesity prevalence in children has risen dramatically in the last 20 years. The other associated risks of obesity could be as such type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, and infertility, some forms of cancers, psychological and social problems, and functional limitations. On the other hand, there are certain illustrations in an attempt to reduce the rate of coronary heart disease and dietary. Furthermore, the change in nutritional information is the most critical element of the recent obesity epidemic (Harcombe 2015). In other words, the one critical factor at the start of the growth in obesity rates was a change in dietary advice, therefore, understanding the said change in the diet may effect on the level of obesity.

Furthermore, it is hard to determine a final scientific illustration of the cause of the obesity pandemic, because population environmental changes are hard to separate and temporarily manipulate (Hall, 2018). It is easier to control out simple explanations of obesity, such as those based on individual dietary. This research will attempt to fill this gap by using primary research through the distribution of a questionnaire and the collection of the needed data. Methodology This research used a mixed design method. This design has been chosen because the study analyzed the data in two ways, quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative design illustrated the awareness of obesity among KICL students, its consequences as well as the importance of following healthy diet, and translated them into graphs to describe the finding (Rahman, 2016).

This design provided close questions, which were multiple, chooses questions. Moreover, close questions helped in accumulating data, which leaded to a balance between participation and observation. Besides, the data from intimate subjects were analyzed by using excel graphs because Excel made it simpler to distinguish data and understand the finding. In order to estimate the prevalence and the causes of obesity amongst internal students, a structured questionnaire was used. The questionnaire covered the following sections, demographic data and all the elements that reveal the level of awareness among KICL students with obesity, its consequences and the importance of following healthy diet. The mixed design was appropriate for this report, which aims to recognize the level of awareness of obesity among KICL students and the level of consciousness in following a healthy diet at KICL.

The research was carried out in Kaplan International College London where 25 fulltime international students were interviewed. Of the 25 international students, were six male students and nine female students from the pre-masters class, they were aged 19-24 yrs. Of these, seven were of Chinese origin, and one each from Morocco, Vietnam, Turkish, and Taiwan. For the foundation student, five students were male, two were female, and they were aged 16- 18 yrs. Of these, two were from Saudi and three were of Chinese origin. The remaining five students were never sure whether they knew the long-term effects of unhealthy foods. In the study, 15 students claimed that they knew how to prevent obesity at family and country level. This is against the five students who do not know how to prevent obesity at family and country level, and the five students who are not sure of their knowledge.

Figure 3: KICL level of awareness of following healthy diet The students were further asked how often they check the nutritional status of the food they buy. Only five registered that they never checked the food parameters making it 20% score. The few that attempted in answering relied on dietary habits and proper exercise. Question 15 asked on the knowledge of avoiding obesity at family and country level. Surprisingly, majority never commented and claimed that their knowledge of scope and prevalence were not up to date. However, the few that commented suggested countrywide campaigns for people at the risk of obesity as well as national dietary regulations to all susceptible ages. Discussion The research projected that 15 out of 25 students were aware of obesity and its consequences.

The overall percentage of awareness was 40% for male and 60% for female. This indicates that more female students are like to control their diets that male students. This study stands among the few that examines the dietary intake for students in schools and colleges. This group records a steady change of lifestyles during the period of study. As their lifestyle become more complex, there is an increase in purchasing power and long hours of idleness (Vohra et al. An important aspects in diet consideration Is the factor “fat”. It is widely known that fat poses a risk to human health. According to Skerrett and Willett (2010), there exist four varieties of fats including trans fats, saturated fats, monosaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. These researches indicate that trans-fat occur from partially hydrogenated oils and is a risk the cardiovascular health.

In the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, Skerrett and Willett (2010), elaborates that trans-fat increase the levels of low-density lipoprotein while suppressing the high-density lipoprotein that are safe for health. This is because they have high-calorie density but are less satiable. In average, a woman requires 2000 calories per day in order to maintain normal body and 1500 calories per day in order to lose one pound of weight. On the other hand, a man requires 2500 and 2000 calories per day to maintain body and lose one pound of weight respectively. Such awareness is necessary for students to make an informed choice on healthy and unhealthy dietary habits. The results from the study also indicate that only 15 students knew how to prevent obesity. (Kumah and Osae (2015) creates the same awareness in their study, in which the noted a laxity in students being involved in exercise activities.

Similar to this study, college students quite often do not have regular pattern of exercise as a way of avoiding obesity. This rich-out program will enable students to adopt relevant measures to avoid future cases of obesity. Conclusion and Recommendation: (500 words) In conclusion, the research mandated to investigate as to whether there was awareness of obesity among the young people and as to whether young people were aware of healthy living habits. This was aided by a series of questions as in what is the status quo of obesity awareness among young people and KICL, were the students at KCIL aware of the consequences of obesity? Finally, what was the level of awareness concerning healthy diet among the 25 KCIL students? Through a properly organized questionnaire, 15 students accepted that they were aware of the obesity condition, five students were not aware while five were not sure of their awareness in association to obesity.

In their study, Njelekela and colleagues indicate that obesity prevalence among the young is about 5. This figure is quite significant and indicates the degree of healthy diet among these families. However, this study makes an advanced discovery of the knowledge among the youth. This, therefore, forms kind of a new data in this field in as long as awareness is concerned. Limitations during the study included tools for collecting data. Bibliography Alford, S. ,et al. Appendix1: Reflection: Conducting a scientific research is quite a challenging idea. This is factual since one has to balance between; proving the hypothesis, and what actually exists in the field. Actually, sometimes the researcher’s thoughts emerge directly opposite to the reality in the field of data collection. During the research, the participants required a confidentiality that their data would remain solely for research purposes and not for publicity. Moreover, the researchers experienced challenges when it comes to propaganda. This is because current data become obsolete with time followed by limited studies being undertaken. For future purposes, it is important to explore all sources of secondary data other than relying on the net such as google scholar.
