Fadiman, thoroughly traces the differences between the two cultures; Hmong spiritual treatment and healing inclinations methods and American scientific inclinations in respect to treatment methods which comprise the overall theme of the book. Among key themes also covered by Fadiman include: for one, the role of Americans in the war in Laos, secondly, it also covers the history of Hmong people, and lastly, the several challenges of the plight of refugees and immigration, particularly with respect to discrimination and the process of assimilation (Fadiman, 2012).
