Beowulf as an Epic Poem Essay
Beowulf is one of the oldest and most renowned epic poems in the English language. The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald is an interesting novel that captures the concept of the American dream and how bland or uninterested the upper class is to American society. To help convey this message effectively, Fitzgerald uses Gatsby to represent the ideal American Dream and Daisy, to represent the ideal girl. To fill the missing puzzles, he included some characters to make the story complete. George Wilson is one of the minor characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. However, his passivity is very important as his functional purpose in The Great Gatsby is both moral and thematic. Mr. Wilson’s Great Gatsby’s appearance was first seen in chapter 2 as an introduction to another character, Myrtle Wilson, his wife when Tom Buchanan stops by his garage to pick up Myrtle (Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby). …

The Problem of Age in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
The Prince speaks these words in act 5, scene 3, lines 308-309, about two star-crossed lovers who were destined to die from the moment that Shakespeare laid his pen on the page. It wasn't just their ill-fate that made the story a tragedy, but also the age of Romeo and Juliet when the events transpire. There is a larger problem, one that presents itself centuries after the play was written – boys and girls looking to the text as a means of making adult decisions before ever reaching what we consider a "mature age" today. In this essay, we will define the ages of these youth, look at 14th/15th century standards, the developmental milestones of a 13-year old, the developmental milestones of a 17-year-old, and why we should stop presenting William Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers to such an impressionable age of children…

The Very Unhappy Ending of Lord of the Flies
A casual reader of William Golding's Lord of the Flies might be inclined to think that the ending of the book is somewhat happy. After a harrowing ordeal in which the main character, Ralph, survives the depraved bloodlust of Jack and his gang of savages, a cruiser shows up, and its captain rescues the children from the deserted island. Yet despite the happiness of the ending, it feels brittle to a reader for multiple reasons. The first and most obvious reason the rescue feels out of place is that it represents a classic Greek deus ex machina (God of the Machine). The second and more ominous reason the recovery feels out of place is the lingering question of who will rescue the captain and his cruiser, which Golding poses at the very end. Is Golding's Lord of the Flies ending as happy as it seems on the surface? Or is there some more profound, more sinister ending that hides behind the brittle facade of a rescue?…
