Does Exercising have an Impact on Sleeping Pattern

Document 1

From an individual point of view, I feel that I lack motivation for engaging in physical exercise leading to a feeling of tiredness always. If there are any positive effects of exercise on my sleep, I will continually engage in exercises so as to keep a rhythmic sleep pattern. Quality sleep is associated with improved health and well-being. This is a positive lifestyle, which I intend to achieve in life. Therefore, any measure or activity that will lead to a more active lifestyle would be a welcome to me. In the current study, if the level of exercise is manipulated, the sleep pattern will be affected. In determining the quality of sleep achieved, I will be assessing the amount of REM sleep tracked throughout the entire research period.

A Fitbit watch will be used to track REM sleep attained during the five days when I will be undergoing the self-care test. A Fitbit watch is used in calculating the sleep stages based on a person’s movements as well as heart rate patterns thus making it possible to ascertain the instances a person experience REM sleep in any given night. The Fitbit watch used in the self-care test has no technical properties as once it is worn before sleeping; it calculates the sleep stages without need for adjustment. During this time, the sleeping pattern will be track to help in ascertaining the change that emanates from the intervention. Lastly, the C stage involves removing the intervention to see whether the condition returns to the baseline.

This will involve withdrawing the exercise and tracking the sleep pattern during this time to see whether they return to A, which is the baseline. Appropriateness of the ABC design for the current study emanates from the fact that the study is a single-subject research where the researcher conducts personal self-care assessment. Self-care assessment is an important approach in ascertaining the factors that limit the overall health and well-being of an individual. Due to availability of resources and ease of accessibility, I only considered four types of physical exercise during the self-care assessment process. These comprise of jogging, swimming, cycling, and light gym activities. I consider each intervention measure or physical exercise to happen on a single day in a consecutive manner.

Additionally, the time duration for all exercises is thirty minutes with motivation to arrive at unbiased results serving as the primary driver of ensuring consistency during the self-care assessment. Anticipated Problems and Motivation Although the study is a self-care assessment, which should be much easier for the researcher, I had anticipated some problems that may have limited the viability of the study. Control of Variables Controlling variables is critical in a research to ensure consistency of findings. This is primarily based on the fact that other than there are variables outside the dependent and independent variables that may affect the outcome of the study. During the self-care assessment, exercising was uniform as every planned exercising activity was adhered to throughout the study period.

Wearing the Fitbit watch was equally uniform throughout the study, apart from one day when I forgot to wear it. However, there is no possible major effect of failing to wear the Fitbit for a single day considering that the study runs for a period of eight weeks. The other ethical issue related to whether there was any risk to my physical well-being during the study. Lastly, there was an ethical issue was establishing whether the research methodology would encourage a biased outcome. In addressing the first ethical issue, I ensured that the intended intervention, which is exercising, would only involve practices that are common and have been tested and applied by previous study participants in different fields as opposed to coming up with new practices.
