According to Rowlands, Cleland & Trussell (2014), many women experience repeated abortions throughout their reproductive years. Thousands if not hundreds of women attempt to abort the unborn baby or fetus since they are not ready to be mothers. As a way of dealing with such a problem, they end up terminating the pregnancy. Although I am pro-life and supports the right of the unborn to live, I have come to acknowledge and accept the pro-choice arguments. Many women lose their lives due to illegal abortions. Drugs are prescribed to end the pregnancy as they cause the onset of uterine contractions and eventually empties the uterus. Following this event, the women experience cramping, pain, bleeding and at times, fever during this process. According to the National Abortion Foundation, medical abortion is safe (Farrell, 2010).

Besides, the group argues that medical abortion does not hinder the chances of the woman to become pregnant again in future. On the other hand, surgical abortions occur through a method known as vacuum aspiration. Most schools do not allow pregnant girls in school, although the policies have changed in several countries. Often, girls who leave school in order to raise a baby end up living in poverty for the rest of their lives. Moreover, children born to young mothers are likely to develop cognitive and emotional problems later on in their lives. The young mothers might not be in a position to offer the children quality care and a stimulating environment. Therefore, prohibiting these teenage girls to carry out abortion will deny them a chance to continue their education and live their desired way of life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines unsafe abortion as the procedure of bringing an end to a pregnancy performed by attendants who lack appropriate skills, or in a setting that lacks the appropriate standards for the procedure, or even both (Rowlands, 2014). Such abortions can be self-induced, offered by traditional healers, or obtained covertly from paramedical or medical practitioners (Sedgh, Singh, Shah, Åhman, Henshaw, & Bankole, 2012). Legal restrictions on abortion, whether real or perceived, is the major factor that influences a woman to have a safe abortion. Unsafe abortions have adverse impacts on the health of the women. Some of the long-term effects include increased risks of fistula and fertility among others. When abortion is legalized, many women will freely seek help from medical professionals to terminate unwanted pregnancies and this way, lives will be saved.

Legalization is the best way of making abortions safe As mentioned earlier, unsafe abortions are the major cause of morbidity and mortality among women. The main causes of deaths related to unsafe abortions are the trauma of the abdominal and genital organs, hemorrhage, peritonitis, and sepsis as consequences of poisoning or insertion of foreign objects during the attempts of provoking abortions (Singh, 2010). Also, abortion is related to cases of infertility and inability to conceive in the future due to the damage caused on the uterus. Lastly, pro-life individuals regard abortion as a violation of human dignity (Kaczor, 2014). It is wrong and unethical to unfairly end the life of the unborn child. From the analysis, it is evident that the restrictive legislation prohibiting abortion prevent women from enjoying a lifestyle of their choice, and therefore, abortion should remain legal.
