In their fight for empowerment, the members of the movement experienced police brutality and repression. The poem has a translation in Spanish known as Yo Soy Joaquin. In this essay, the meaning of the poem will be established. In the 7th section of the poem, Gonzales writes,"I am the mountain Indian/superior over all. " This signifies the Amerindian lineage of the Chicanos and reminds of how Amerindians had been rulers in great empires similar to that of the Maya and Aztec.
