Impacts of Artificial Intelligence
Of the many emergent technologies, Artificial Intelligence, AI for short, is conspicuous. Artificial Intelligence can be loosely defined as the creation of systems that are capable of executing tasks that traditionally demanded human expertise and if possible excelling humans at these tasks. For a field with such an apparently futuristic theme, the effects of Artificial Intelligence on society have been felt everywhere, even in areas in which it was not immediately apparent that its effects would ensue. There has been some level of disagreement among experts as to what the key milestones of Artificial Intelligence should be, but the general opinion is there is constant progress (Baum et al. In addition, even more, its effects have been felt sooner; overnight as it were, than it was anticipated by many and ever since the developments have only increased relentlessly.
The emergence of smart toys such as Anki’s Cozmo, powered by Artificial Intelligence has completely revolutionized the toy industry. These toys are increasingly safer and are closer to the needs of their target audience. They can for instance gauge the engagement of the user and even deduce their current emotions based on complex algorithms. Cozmo is even clever enough to recognize the user as well as pets, aside from being able to detect edges of whatever surface it is on and avoid falling off. AI is also responsible for the relevant media recommendations experienced by users in various video streaming platforms such as YouTube. For example, AI was used in the design of a horror movie "Morgan. ” Now, this was a much-unexpected detour but despite this, the team reported significantly cutting on time, resources, and money.
This was reportedly achieved by teaching the system using several horror movies. Impacts on Medicine Artificial Intelligence has had numerous impacts in form of applications in the field of Medicine. Diagnosing diseases has been much simplified by the application of contemporary advancements in AI. Such cars have the ability to get themselves from point A to point B without the intervention of a human (Pomerleau 92). The application of this has not been fettered to smaller vehicles such as the Tesla Model S; companies such as Waymo have developed autonomous trucks. The future for these autonomous vehicles has proven bright for they have been found to be much safer and less likely than the average human to cause accidents, thus promising a safer future for transportation. This was further affirmed by US government’s investigation into a crash involving Model S car made by Tesla that was self-navigating.
It was concluded that the unfortunate accident was not caused by a defective autopilot system (Mitchell). Personal assistants have been made practical with the arrival of AI technology. This has specifically been made possible by advancements in Speech to Text technology as well as Natural Language Synthesis both of which have made it possible for computers to decipher natural language and compose natural language responses. The result of these technologies as best recognized in Siri, Google Now and Cortana, as well as Nuance's Dragon, Naturally Speaking. AI is also constantly at work in preventing spam from finding their way into email inboxes. Intelligent systems have recently been put to work in recognition of faces for forensic purposes more efficiently compared to their human counterparts in the process enhancing security for the public.
