Everyone in the family agreed to her going back to school although she had a major challenge in doing this. It was hard for her to adapt to the new schedule and to fit in a class whereby most of the classmates were young enough to be her own children. The teachers were her age mates and thus she would not feel at ease when expressing herself. The two approaches that would be used to understand the behavior of Meryemn are cognitive approach and psychodynamic approach. It was in the late 1950s as well as early1960s that the cognitive approach began to revolutionize the psychology field. (2016) stated that when people are making such attributions, they work out in different stages.

First they tend to decide whether the person should be blamed for his behavior, secondly, they decide whether the person is responsible and lastly, they decide whether the situation plays a role in the weird behavior of the individual. On the other hand, psychodynamic approach puts more focus on three parts of the mind which include the preconscious, conscious and the unconscious. It also focuses on the three personality components including ego, superego and id. Conscious are perceptions and thoughts while unconscious includes desires and wishes that are formed in childhood. On the other hand, psychodynamic would help in understanding her behavior using her feelings. Her feelings would help in understanding what she thinks about her surrounding and what is happening to her, thus being able to identify the reason for her behavior.

By understanding her feelings, it could be established that she does not feel comfortable being the odd one out in her class. Comparing and contrasting the two approaches The two approached has different ways in which they could be undertaken. In cognitive approach one should observe and experiment. Instead it states that behavior is cause by forces in unconscious. On the other hand, cognitive approach states that a behavior is learned as person processes information and as they experience a mental change in ways that are important over a period of time. Also, the psychodynamic approach states that a behavior is predetermined. It also states that a person has the ability and the power to makes changes to the cognition. While cognitive approach is considered to be scientific, psychodynamic is not.

Her husband, who was used to spending more time with her, is pissed off by the fact that she is no longer available even to cook for him. Moreover, the councilor she is visiting in her school is also younger than her and thus she may not be able to fully express herself to her. All these are factors that may make her lose confidence and therefore she is not confident and she does not trust herself whenever she has to say something inform of people despite the fact that she is presentable physically. The best intervention in the cognitive approach would be formulation. It is a clear indication that she needed a formulation that would help her stabilize and gain confidence in herself.

However, after sometime it is realized that all that is happening around her has been affecting her psychologically. The fact that she is not telling that she is undergoing a psychological challenge is also an indication that she needs help. On the other hand, psychodynamic therapy puts more focus on the unconscious process since they are all manifested in the present behavior of a client. The major goal of this therapy is to ensure that the client has an understanding of his or her own self-awareness and the influence it has on his past and present behavior. The therapy would also enable a client examine the unresolved conflicts as well as the symptoms arising from the past dysfunctional relationships thus manifesting themselves in the desire and need to abuse substance, (Basham et al.

Clinical research evidence During the assessment of the how a treatment modality can work well, it is necessary to understand the difference between effectiveness and efficacy. Efficacy is how good an intervention in therapy can be in a scientific and experimental condition, (Basham et al. Several studies that aim at assessing the PP and the Cognitive approach make an assessment of the efficacy of the treatments in the RCTs. These are known to be the gold standards of a practice that is based on evidence. While there is a good internal validity of RCTs, they contain external validity that is questionable. measures the changes in the therapy though the assessment of the score reduction on the standardized depression measures which were from the pre to post treatment (Cuijpers et al.

It also measured the number of the patients who were able to respond to the treatment. Lastly, they assessed the number of patients who were able to achieve remission due to the treatment. They then found out that the studies that they analyzed had inflated the clinically significant changes that had taken place in the symptoms of the patients’ depression since the results were supposed to be reported in terms of effect sizes rather than clinically significant reductions on a measure of depression. This is a proof that the previous studies had confounded the efficacy of the treatments with a change in the lives of the patients that was clinically significant and lasting. It would also make her realize that she could use the advantage of the fact that she has more experience to life than they have.
