The organization also provides specialized rehabilitation services such as cardiopulmonary programs and orthopedic rehabilitation. I call the nursing facility to confirm the date of my visit. Upon consenting, I decide to drive 400 meters from my place of residence to the facility. On entering the facility, it is already 9 am. I notice that there were security guards who are standing at strategic places. Mr. Johns calls back after a few minutes and invites me in one of his patient’s room. “I am Johns but my patients refer to me as doctor Johns. ” He is wearing a warm grey suit and a white shirt. His tie is black and geometric patterned which matches his black leather shoes. The other wall of the room had a large window that opens to a large flower garden.

I also notice a chair placed next to the window. Johns reports to me that the chair is positioned on Ann’s favorite sitting position even though presently she sat folding her hands in front of her on her bed. The wall on the side of her bed is painted in a pale aqua blue with a large golden flower neatly drawn on it. Next to the door are three large green potted plants. However, I was informed that she has not understood a thing which forced Johns to repeat whatever I had said in a much higher pitch. She started to look happy, she felt particularly excited when reporting about her experiences while raising her children in her early thirties.

Even though I could not understand most of what she had to say due to the way she pronounced words, I noticed that the most essential component of treatment in such environs was to make these elderly patients to feel as comfortable as possible. (It also occurred to me that there is an urgent need to promote patience and understanding between the elderly and the youth and the only way of doing this is by ensuring this parties interact and share their experience more often). Anna continues to narrate to Johns and me some of the difficulties that she had undergone which included having inadequate funds to cater for their family needs that forced her and her husband to work extra hard in their flower farm.

Obs. Q: How long has she stayed in this facility? Johns A: She has been here for only three weeks now. Obs. Q: What must have prompted the urgent leave, was her room not comfortable enough for her? Johns seems not to have all the answers to all these questions, he appeared to be more worried and sounded as though all was not well). Johns A: I am yet to find out (he responded while having a distant look). We were ble to establish that the sadness is as a result of failure on the side of their family members to pay the occasional visit. As Johns later pointed out, the feeling of being neglected is the worst. “The relatives could be simply ignorant or lazy but failing to visit an elderly parent or relative is such irresponsible gesture.

” Another room had another lady whose hearing was equally impaired. However, as opposed to Anna, she was also mute. Sheth. "It is only the other day you joined us I can't believe days are moving that fast. " A colleague joins in the conversation. The Reliant Senior Care is serving appealing food its canteen store. Fried chicken, duck rice, fresh fruit juice among other delicious foods in addition to live entertainment. However, he is quick to point out that he has a positive attitude towards life and that he is grateful for the wheelchair as he can easily wheel it and support himself to different parts of the nursing home. Other elderly persons appeared to be engaged in different games while others chatted in high tones.

A majority of others proved to be very friendly. I could wave to them and they could wave back enthusiastically. Back at Johns’ office, I notice that they are still engrossed in documenting the assessments from his notebook to his office computer. For instance, I realized that the elderly require a lot of support that should not be left in the hands of doctors. Instead, family members must join in providing the much-needed care to this category of people. Nevertheless, even though the nursing homes strive to provide a warm and welcoming environment for the elderly, it is still very difficult for the elderly to feel comfortable when their close relatives and family members fail to visit them. Their absence makes the elderly to feel neglected and rejected by the society.
