In this paper, a discussion on the impacts of war upon the Anglo-American modernists shall be illustrated in detail. World War I affected the spirit of modernism. For instance, new ideas in different fields were stimulated. These new ideas were also implemented in psychology, philosophy and anthropology. The World War I shaped literature in America and also resulted in the evolution of modernism during the 20th century. In the mid-20th century, literature was used as a medium through which the public could be informed regarding the warfare. After World War I, most novelists undertook various measures and practices that were aimed at capturing experiences. To effectively capture experiences, there was a need for novelists engage in practices that would capture identity. Therefore, it is correct to state that modernism after World War I was characterized with new ways that were aimed at capturing experience and identity ("Out of the wasteland: the first World War and modernism", 2018).

The evolution of modernism after World War I challenged the devices and forms of literature. This was evident in their artworks such as poems and novels. In expressing their feelings about World War I, the authors were able to convey crucial information that could be of help to the public. The aim of conveying information about the warfare enabled a deeper understanding of the adverse effects of engaging in warfare. The modernists’ revolution enabled poets and novelists express themselves in various ways that the public could easily relate to. For instance, the novel “The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the World War” by Jaroslav Hasek illustrates human participation in the warfare. In relating ideas, an emphasis on a particular issue is achieved. Another impact of World War I on literature is the manner in which various authors argued on the dominant factors of warfare.

For instance, arguments on the manipulation of economic factors and ideological factors affected literature. World War I occasioned the antidemocratic views among poets and novelists. This was evident in novels and poems during the mid-1900s. This was evident in works such as “The Great Gatsby. ” Such works also portrayed an abandonment of structures that were common in literature. Examples of such structures include the traditional rhythmic structures. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” is a novel by an American author, Scott Fitzgerald. During the writing of the novel, Scott Fitzgerald was specific on the choice of words he was to use. The novels were used a medium to convey the information of the warfare to the public. According to scholars, some of the authors used titles that were related to the warfare.

Such titles make readers eager on reading the novels. Some authors use others techniques to capture the attention of readers. For instance, most novelists have interesting opening lines. For instance, resulted in changes in perceptions among novelists and poets. Through these perceptions, it became easier for writers to convey their messages regarding the warfare in their writings. Research indicates that the impacts of World War I affected the modernists’ writers in various ways. For example, literary works that were published after 1918 portrayed writers’ attitudes, feelings and emotions that were warfare related. The devastations of World War I also affected the themes, literary styles and plot settings of novels. However, after the evolution of modernism and civilisation, novelists put more emphasis on themes and the message to be conveyed to readers. The modern civilisation was evident in the writings.

Authors had to emphasise trending issues. During 1918, the trending issue was the World War I, thus Anglo-American modernists had to include the events of World War I into their writings. This signifies the change of literature. According to research conducted regarding World Wars, most people lost their lives. The warfare machinery caused lots of destruction on human properties. This contributed to Anglo-American authors focus on warfare as a subject in their writings. It is a correct to state that World War I contributed to the use of language by novelists and poets. Language use depends on the events being discussed. Comparing literature that existed before 1914 to literature past 1918 denotes differences in themes and plot setting. Such differences have been attributed to the warfare. Authors that took part in World War I used themes that depicted the devastations of the war.
