Benito Mussolini of Italy is the epitome of a fascist leader as far as the world history is concerned. He promoted dictatorship in Italy and ruled in a way that regimented the society and suppressed the opposition. A fascist system is too rigid and does not allow any form of free expression and the movie ‘La Vita e Bella’ which sidesteps politics with human ingenuity would not have fitted in Mussolini’s Italy. To succeed in instilling a fascist ideology in Italian society, Mussolini adopted various strategies that led to radical authoritarianism. The first instrument that he used was coercion, and this was through repression and terror, and it acted as the catalyzing agent in diffusing the ideology of fascism among the Italians.

This paper will support this claim by indicating how the radio was used to diffuse fascist ideas in the context of the messianic impressions of Benito Mussolini, the strength of unity in dictatorial regimes, the political ideology of an empire and lastly the context of violence. It will then conclude by summarizing the main points and restating the above claim. The messianic impression of Benito Mussolini. For a fascist regime to prevail, the leader should first win the popular support among the citizens. The citizens must see the leader as virile in the context of what they actually need, and his attributes must also be appealing to the majority of the populations (Finchelstein 320-331). It is impossible for a busy leader like Mussolini to participate in all these sports, but his influence on the radios facilitated his presentation as a sporty man, and this impressed the Italians who as a result saw their leader as a fearless and brave hero.

Benito Mussolini was the youngest prime minister in the history of Italy and to promote his fascist regime; his youthfulness had to be protected through propaganda too. During his time, youthfulness was seen a driver for action and virility among the leaders and being the youngest prime minister won him popularity among the Italians as they saw him as an active leader that would lead the country in the right direction. In this regard, the radio was used to spread the propaganda that maintained his youthfulness by always playing the fascist anthem, giovinezza, which always talked about the youthfulness of Mussolini and how his young age would contribute to the rebirth of the nation. Due to the fact that he also had control over the country’s radio networks, he ensured that the radios did not broadcast his illnesses and birthdays to spread the impression of him never getting old.

The popularity of Mussolini is hugely credited to how he marketed himself to the Italian people. This earned him so much popularity and loyalty that ensured his fascist regime prevailed without much resistance. As indicated above the radio played a significant role in creating his desirable image through the spread of propaganda. The strength of unity in fascist regimes. According to Mussolini, the basis of a fascist regime is on the conception of the state. The radio broadcasted the power of the machinery that Mussolini had put in the ground for the purpose of reclaiming the marshes. The broadcasts paralleled the tracks to military authority, and this appealed to most Italians and encouraged them to be part of the program. After the reclamation, Benito Mussolini himself visited the marshes to check out the progress, and during his visit, the radios broadcasted how he joined the laborers in doing some of the work and more specifically the radio was used to communicate how he enjoyed the grapes that had been produced from the land.

Chances are that there were no grapes in that land, but instead, the grapes were sourced from the neighboring region and not produced from the former marshlands (Caprotti and Kaïka 613-634). All the same, the impact of the broadcasts was as expected and his personal visit influenced more people to consider relocating to the marshlands. To achieve this unity, and align the citizens with the aims of the state, Mussolini used propaganda, and the radio was instrumental in spreading it. The political ideology of an empire. Apart from the social and economic aspects that guarantee the existence of fascist regimes as discussed above, a political ideology is also necessary to promote the establishment of a fascist regime. A political ideology is the combination of specific myths, doctrines, and symbols which offers the cultural and political blueprint on how a nation or a community should work.

The political aspect of fascism as an ideology during the reign of Benito Mussolini was based on the formation of an empire which would strengthen Italy and protect it from its enemies. This gave the fascist regime the protection of a progressivism ideology that was accepted and embraced by the Italians. The radio also broadcasted messages that involved the isolation, clearing and the restoration of ancient buildings such as the Augusto Mausoleum and Aris Pacis all to induce a political ideology that revives the past glories of the ancient Roman Empire (Shaw). Far from the architectural buildings, Mussolini also organized propagandist events such as the celebration of the birthdays of Augusto to further stress the political ideology he wanted to be associated with him, and the radio played an important role by effectively broadcasting these events.

From the above discussion, it is clear that the role of the radio in the efforts to embrace a political ideology like that which was used by Augusto was spreading propaganda that stressed the relationship between Mussolini’s dictatorial leadership and the caesarian leadership. This relationship was important as it helped in reviving the past glories of the past Roman Empire that induced a strong sense of patriotism among the Italians that would have made them proud of Mussolini’s style of leadership instead of opposing it. During the reign of Mussolini, the Second World War was looming, and this further heightened the tension of violence in his rule. Most fascist leaders are often caught up in violence, and the fact is that they are rarely involved in it directly.

This implies that to use violence, fascist leaders have to recruit soldiers to fight for them. This recruitment requires an extensive use of propaganda, and this is where the role of the radio comes in within this context. The radio was an instrumental tool that helped Mussolini secure soldiers who helped him maintain his fascist regime. This went a long way in ensuring the effectiveness of capillary organization of masses as he commanded a lot of influence as a result of the image that was falsely created through the radio propaganda. Still, through the spread of propaganda, Mussolini used the radio to make the Italians proud about violence and war. This ensured the effectiveness of the discrimination against the outsiders as an authoritarian tool.
