At the same time, exposure of business to both outdoor and indoor environment has made business to be sensitive to occupational safety measures in its operations. The Industrialization has caused both negative and positive effects to the environment in which it operates. Through Social Corporate Responsibility, businesses have been able to improve the environment in which they operate as they obliged by the law to do so. One such agency is the United Nations’ International Labour Organization which was founded in 1919 to encourage social protection at work (Fleishman, 2008). Millions of injuries occurring in steel industry are greatly increasing the potential cost of compensation to employers. Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) are vital guidelines towards protecting and preserving both facility and human resources in any workplace where production takes place.

The OHSMS also calls upon the employers or the business owners to try and prevent any catastrophic losses that may arise from their operations. For the past three decades, there are so many changes that have taken place in production sector that have created a corresponding change in OHSMS. Some of these changes are Technological changes that are now introducing new hazards in the work environment. These hazards may not have been taken into account in the previous OHSMS stipulations. It is a state of complete mental, physical and social well-being of a person (International Labour Organization, 2018). OHSMS fosters safe work conditions for not only workers but also their family members, customers, employers and any other person who might be affected by the operational activities of the business. It is the responsibility of the employers to take charge of the health and safety of their employees. Statute laws may create other duties which are either general or specific to the employers to regulate safety issues in a particular workplace. According to Kyle, some of the common hazards in workplaces are (2016): a. Occupational hearing loss. It is a common injury among the workers in the United States of America. Over 242 million workers in the United States are working in environment that is threatened by a lot of noise (Roberts, 2003).

Because of this, the state spends a lot of money on these people in terms of compensation for hearing-associated disabilities. These are also called the Biohazards. Biological hazards in this case may include infectious microorganisms like viruses and bacteria. They produce toxins that are harmful. Examples of these toxins include anthrax. Many workers in various industries are affected differently by the biohazards. The final hazard is psychosocial hazard. This is a group of hazards that have got an effect on emotional and mental well-being of the workers. They include feelings that are associated with long work hours, job insecurity, poor balance between work and their social life. Work directed interventions rather than clinical interventions can be useful in solving these problems.

After consultations with former workers of ThyssenKrupp Company, it was realized that there are people who were amputated by “falls” (Maples, 2014). The worst part of consultation is that these individuals were never compensated by the Company. Recommendation The management of the Company has tried to put in a lot of efforts as much as the health of its employees is concerned. However a lot needs to be done in order to ensure that all aspects of safety of its staffs and any person who comes into the Company are taken care of. This report finds it important to make the following three recommendations: a. Someone who is more knowledgeable in matters pertaining technical work should be put in charge of health and safety of the industry rather than delegating this responsibility to the human resource department.
