The main reason was to ensure that a system of checks and balances was built and to ensure there was balance and no particular branch had more power than the other. A government that is not elected democratically has its significance. One is that there are no worries about how decisions they make are going to affect their reelection during the next term. An excellent example is when judges are expected to follow the law despite whether the ruling, they make is going to be popular in the subsequent election or not. Usually, judges are nominated by the president of America, and later they are confirmed by the Senate.
