Analysis on the Media Bias on Jamal Khashoggi case
et cetera. These types of media bias were evident especially after the recent mysterious murder of a journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. The disappearance and alleged killing of Saudi Arabian journalist Khashoggi raised an uproar in the media confines in the USA and the international community too. The media was biased in its reports, by running into conclusions without thorough investigations into the matter. This was an evident case of bias on selection of sources and also bias on selection of a story. He was never shy to condemn Saudi Arabia’s oppressive policies and the extra-judicial manner in which it handled oppositions. Although the media houses reported that Khashoggi had been murdered in the Saudi consulate in Turkey, there is no concrete evidence as the man’s body remains are still yet to be found.
I can say that the media lacked professionalism and media ethics. When the whole world was concerned about Khashoggi’s disappearance and alleged murder, any story that was brought up linked to some sense was believed to be true, same as news circulated in social media platforms. “Saudi Arabia is one of the safest place to be a journalist in the world”, said Jonas Max Ferris, a Fox news contributor. The revelation of the investigative surveillance footage gave the international community some light on the Khashoggi case. Earlier on, the Saudi government had refuted claims that Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Turkey with controversial statements, claiming that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive and well on that day. But after what the Turkish source in the footage describes as a “body double”, and clearly not Khashoggi, seen leaving the premises that day the Saudi government had to rethink their position.
According to the Middle East Eye, a very graphic recording of how Khashoggi was killed and his body parts dismembered by the Saudi hit-men is evidence enough of the murder, and is at the safety of the Turkish police. After these evidences the Saudi government admitted that Khashoggi was killed at the consulate by ‘rogue agents’. According to the Washington Post, the Crown Prince Mohhamed bin Sulman, had ordered an operation to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia and be detained there. This report was sourced by the Washington post through US intelligence intercepts. Conclusion This analysis reveals how different factors come into play that control the biasness of media-houses when reporting the disappearance and suspected killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Some media players like Neil and Jonas from Fox News are biased towards the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia because of the investment interests Saudi has with the US, such as tech companies like Uber, and in the $110 million arms deal with the USA.
Some houses like the Saudi Press Agency are biased to contradict reports against the Saudi government even as they lacked their own defensive substantial evidence against these allegations.
