They have also failed to make the communities that people live in safer as crime is escalating in the back streets of various cities in the nation. Quite the opposite tough approaches to combat crime in the US have resulted in the expansion of the prison system which is costing federal government more and more every year. The conclusion on this subject is that tough approaches have failed and it is time the government in US both at national level and at the federal level rethinks the best alternatives to curb the problem of increasing crimes in the nation. For example, according Wilson (2013) increasing prison sentences increases the chances of reoffending among inmates. This is because in most cases even the most severe forms of punishment will not serve as a factor that will deter people who are bent on committing crime, as they often do not care about the aftermath of their criminal behaviour.
