Ban on Smoking in Public Places

With it being a personal choice on whether to smoke or not to it makes it so hard to stop someone from the vice once they get to an age where they can make their own decisions. Therefore, it’s not a decision for any other third party to make the decision for the individual. Knowing that it does not only affect the smoker but also those around who are mostly non-smokers. It’s by the logic that the smokers will not inhale all the smoke from the cigarette instead most of it is released into the air making those around the smoker to become passive smokers. This calls for an intervention of the government to help the none smokers and also control air pollution. Research shows that second-hand smoke is lethal and can cause sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) which is a respiratory infection in children.

In addition, passive smokers are prone to heart diseases and lung cancer for the smoke contain a big number of toxic chemicals with more than 50 of them being carcinogenic. The second-hand smoking has been reported to have caused a big number of cancer-related deaths annually and accelerate deaths of some suffering from heart diseases. This is to mean that this is a big threat for this innocent around the smokers being at risk of infection (Naiman, et al. In addition, the public smoking ban may make most of the smokers to smoke less or even think of quitting. In simple terms, no influence to the peers for no one is allowed to smoke in public. There may be an argument that the ban will infringe the smokers right which is true but on the contrary, the smokers should not risk the health of others who don’t smoke.

So, in this case, we will have to consider the health hazards and safety of the majority and that’s the nonsmokers. Should non-smokers be subject to health hazards that come with smoking? Of course not. Smoking itself is a personal choice and therefore others should not be subject to risk their health at the expense of the smoker’s personal life. This will mean that the rights will be infringed as this ban encourages segregation of smokers from the general public which is against the rule of law. Considering also smoking does not cause any form of aggressiveness as it is for drunkards who may cause an immediate danger to those around yet smokers don’t cause any form of danger. In a different note business like restaurants, bars and other public retails are afraid that with such bans effected they may end up losing some of their customers.
