Benefits of Buying Local Food
Others consider it to be food produced by the farmers that they know. Currently, consumers have become conscious of what they eat and its origin. Knowing where food comes from makes a person develop connection with food and become aware of what they are consuming. There are various reasons as to why consuming local food is better. Benefits of buying local foods One of the reasons why consuming local food tastes better is because it tastes better than the imported food. This ensures that consumers live a healthier lifestyle due to the nutrients supplied to the body without chemicals that can risk the health of consumers (Thomas, 2016). Another benefit of consuming local foods is that it benefits the environment. The reason is that farmers see no need of using chemicals at the growth stage to give the harvested crops durability once they are harvested.
This lack of need to use chemicals is beneficial to the environment because it leaves soil at its natural state, which maintains farmlands. In addition, the consumption of local foods eliminates the need to use plastic storages for transportation. The reason is that the money that is spent on local commodities stays local. Therefore, when people purchase locally produced food, they build their local economy as it prevents the handing over of money to a corporation belonging to another state or country. In addition, because the food does not move to various hands, the money spent by consumers ends up in the hands of those who grow local foods (Carlson, 2016). Therefore, it supports the local small scale farmers who lack the capacity of selling their produce to other regions. The consumption of local foods is important in the creation of local communities.
This presence of different varieties in different regions translates to the preservation of genetic diversity of crops. As farmers become motivated to grow the scale of their crop production, various varieties of crops are preserved and this plays a key role in preventing the extinction of specific crop varieties. One way of supporting the local businesses is through the consumption of local foods. Selling foods in conventional markets curs out farmers and the people involved in the picking of foods. Supermarket chains involved in non-locally produced foods squeeze the local farmers and the people who pick out foods out of business. Thus, the consumption of these types of food results in improved health outcomes. Furthermore, local foods encourage the eating of balanced diets. When consumers decide to purchase the food that has been grown locally, their ability to incorporate healthy proteins, vegetables, and fruits is improved.
This does not happen in the case of processed foods, which discourage the consumption of balanced diets. Therefore, local foods result in enhanced nutrition and prevent the rate of nutrition related health problems. Animal Science.
