Can prison lose its deterrent factor
Document Type:Essay
Subject Area:Criminology
As long as one’s freedom can be curtailed, there will always be a deterrent factor. No one wants to be locked up in a small box regardless of who he or she is. Secondly, prison will always have people who thrive in the environment even though they hate it. They would rather avoid prison, but they do not mind going there if they have to. These individuals will either have an affinity for breaking the law, or she or she will have been institutionalized. Secondly, the prison system should be able to truly deny criminals their freedom. If the system is a joke, the criminals will not be deterred. A prison system that punishes the guilty, attracts social support, and denies criminals their freedom will always be a deterrent.
