Conflict Resolution Reflective Essay
The first disagreement happened between my boyfriend and I. He suspected that I had an affair with a guy at my workplace. He walked up one morning and said to me "I suspect you are having an affair with your workplace buddy. I told him "I don't like being accused maliciously" since the man in question is neither my lover nor boyfriend. I felt insulted because adultery has never been part of me. Conflict happens it doesn't matter how finely the process is dissected. It is crucial for parties to acknowledge the significant stages of conflict since good knowledge of the dynamics results in an efficient and sustainable resolution and management (Boulding, 2017) The second conflict was between my company’s manager and me. The company's manager and I have been experiencing severe conflict regarding the adoption of new staff to enhance production.
The conflict emerged as a result of the formal proposal that was written to the company by another consultancy. The company's manager believes he owns all the ideas and decision within the company. I called the manager and told him "I think there is a need to address our differences because we are not only hurting our conscience but also the success of the company. It is time we sit down and save our company since we are the senior most leaders in this company. The above approach cooled the emotions of the manager which were high at the moment. He also felt the need of having negotiation to find a lasting solution to both ourselves and the sake of the company. I chose negotiation as the most appropriate method to solve our conflict.
When someone communicates effectively, they are able to send the message they intend to without limiting the other person’s ability to reply (Withers & Lewis, 2003). It is imperative to create awareness and prepare the two parties before conflict resolution. Psychological preparedness is important and helps in problem identification (Ladd 2005) After identifying the source of the dispute, I had to come up with objectives and goals. We both agreed on specific objectives and goals. We established long and short-term goals as we as outcomes and solve the difference. After naming the alternative, the manager and myself came up with the best solution. We both agreed to set aside our interest. The interest of the company was put first based on policies and the existing constitution (Brinkert, 2006). It was agreed that the company would not hire any new staff but would rather train existing staff to be competent and prove to be reliable human resource.
I applied win-win approach because it helps in coming up with a more compassionate understanding of each other’s needs and interests before settling on a resolution. In case of conflict eruption, both parties should express the will to have a negotiation to solve the matter. This enhances growth within an organization and development of skills such as conflict management skills. Since conflict in an organisation is inevitable, having the two parties involved solve their conflict without the intervention of third parties leads to a sustainable solution. Throughout the conflict and the resolution process, I discovered that conflict is very important in an organisation since it helps one develop the skills of management and conflict resolution.
