Since July 2011, smoking equipment and tobacco have been considered contraband in prisons. No prisoner was allowed to access or use them. To prevent these products from entering the institutions, a number of screening methods have been employed and intelligence staff has a duty to identify and protect vulnerable regions in the physical environment. Based on studies, a number of contraband items have been confiscated from visitors and inmates. In the United States of America, smuggling of illegal products such as cigarettes, drugs, and cell phones into jails and prisons is a great challenge. For instance, betting slips may result in a widespread gambling empire. The introduction of illegal and forbidden items into prisons compromises staff, facilitate escapes, and lowers morale. The existence of illicit goods and services in the institution also shatters the perception of the public regarding security.

Therefore, Bouchard recommended that individuals working in prisons should monitor the movement of all prohibited items and that they should understand the different definitions of contraband and the consequences of each as a way of ensuring the effectiveness of the monitoring process. Based on a report that was written by Matt Clarke and published in Prison Legal News in 2013 (page 24), contraband smuggling is a problem that is affecting not only United States but other countries in the world. Arcolain planned to smuggle the pills into the Cheshire Correctional Institution. In December 2012, he pleaded guilty to the charges and was, therefore, sentenced in March 2013. District of Columbia- Daishawn Goodson, who was employed at CCA- operated Correctional Treatment Facility, was accused of receiving a bribe. He accepted a bribe of approximately $400 in order to smuggle a thumb drive and cash of almost $100 to a prisoner.

She pleaded guilty in 2012 and later arrested. This will invalidate their work thus jeopardizing the image and reputation of the entire sector. Surprisingly, even the well-paid employees are also participating in corruption with an aim of supplementing their income through illegal means. Several strategies have been formulated and implemented by the corrections officials to combat the smuggling of prohibited goods and services into prisons and an example of such strategies is ensuring that every individual working in jail or prison undergoes searches when reporting for work (Raphael, Lofstrom, & Martin, 2017). The method will prevent them from entering the facility with items which are forbidden. Without the search, it will be very possible for them to carry along illicit items such as drugs and weapons.
