Critical thinking Thesis
The education systems adopted in schools today, are centered on passing examinations and getting remarkable grades in school work rather than internalizing the information taught in class and coming up with pieces of information that can be used outside the confines of the classroom. In that case, it is important that schools and learning institutions embrace systems that will enable learners develop the art and skill of critical thinking. In addition, the study of critical thinking among students in schools is important as it aims at showing that improvement of school performances can be attributed to critical thinking of students in that particular institution. According to Salberg (2011), Finland education system is performing better thus promoting critical thinking among students than most developed countries including the United States.
Salberg (2011) provides that difference between schools in Finland is approximately 6. As a result of the examination based education and training, children lack the ability to think outside the box when the need arises. A closer look at the current environment in the world, an individual is expected to be thinkers and analysts of situations so as to keep pace with the changes that are drastically happening. To ensure that learners become critical thinkers, Seatler (2011), provides that the educational environment must be sustainable and relevant. For a school to adopt the current education system and ensure that it is effective in ensuring that its learners become quality thinkers, the administration of the schools must come up with strategies that shift the focus of their performance on tests alone by also focus on other issues related to the social development of the learner.
Holmes, Weiman and Bonn (2015), state that development of critical thinking in a child is important as it boosts their school performance and class grades. In this stage learners are taught how to write, read, and tackle simple mathematical solutions among other activities. It is noted that the elementary school has reduced its impact on the young learners as many if the institutions are being run for money. In that case, elementary education has turned business to the administration and teachers of these institutions. Therefore, the teaching obligation of a teacher is tuned to match the amount of money that can be made from accommodation of many learners in the institution (Gojkov, Stojanović, & Rajić, 2015). The businesslike mind set in the education sector has greatly affected the education system in countries as individuals are not providing learners with a peaceful and serene environment to explore their capabilities due to changes being made at the institution thus affecting their ability to think critically.
Rewards are motivational factors that are aimed at increasing the performance and productivity of a worker. Therefore provision of rewards to teachers will increase their efforts and change their view regarding teaching their students the art of thinking critically. As a result also, teachers will extend hand to their students in bid to encourage them to adopt the idea of quality thinking. Therefore, the strategy will work to improve the education and training offered in that particular school and consequently aid students develop the art of critical thinking as an expected outcome of learning in a well-organized and structured institution (Butler, 2012). Research question Which are the public policies that the education sector can embrace to ensure that schools are offering students with opportunities and abilities to be critical thinkers? Research aim The aim of the research is to ensure that learners become critical thinkers as a result of the educational training and background they receive in schools and colleges.
In order to get information that is fulfilling regarding critical thinking, both the qualitative and quantitative research methods will be utilized. One of the methods that will be used in collection of data is conduction of interviews to selected individuals mainly three teachers and two parents (Neuman, 2013). These participants will be asked questions regarding the ability of their learners and children to thoroughly think through issues and come up with intelligent solutions. Also the interviewees will be allowed an opportunity to express their feeling towards the current educational system and the ability of the learners to be critical thinkers and the policies that should be adopted by education systems so as to provide learners with a chance to be critical thinkers.
In addition, questionnaires will be used to obtain information from the selected participants so that they can provide additional information regarding the topic of discussion. Education is a very critical factor in a person’s life therefore has to be taken seriously. In addition teachers are the main factors that determine the success of an individual or the lack of it. However in the recent past the education system has degraded and teachers are seen to be losing contact with their responsibility thus affecting the ability of a learner to develop the skill of thinking critically and outside the box. To change this narrative, administrations of school ought to come up with different strategies that will be aimed at improving the learning in their school thus cessation of education degradation.
