The definite cause of schizophrenia is not known, but it is believed that it is caused by several factors that when combined lead to the disorder. They include genetics, chemistry in the brain, and other environmental factors. Coming from a family with a history of schizophrenia, increased activation of the immune system and uptake of mind-altering drugs are some of the factors that may increase the risk of getting schizophrenia (Abel & Nickl-Jockschat, 2016). If left untreated, schizophrenia may have the following effects on the affected person; thoughts and increased attempts at suicide, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and inability to complete the tasks given, abuse of alcohol and other substances. The victim might also suffer instances of isolating themselves from other members of the society Schizophrenia is treated using antipsychotic medication.
