General Review of the Sex Situation and Love in Place Analysis
The “General Review Of The Sex Situation” uses rhyme to talk straightforwardly to convey its message loud and clear whereas “Love In Place” uses figurative language to convey its message. Nevertheless, this paper seeks to literary analysis how love is depicted in the two poems. Whereby, in “General Review of The Sex Situation” Love is portrayed to be skeptical while in “Love In Place” Love is demonstrated compassionately through imagery. First, In “General Review Of The Sex Situation” the main theme depicted is Love which is developed by the use of imagery and diction. Diction in poetry refers to the choice of words that a poet uses to convey their messages. Furthermore, in this poem the speaker being a woman who is the poet “Dorothy Parker,” the readers assume that she is going to be negative thus making the poem negative as well.
However, as one reads the poem, he or she gets to know that the speaker is talking about “Sex Situation. ” The tone she writes about is negative about men who are evident through the choice of words. Nonetheless, the tone she uses in writing this poem is demonstrated to be from the opposite gender. She is biased and is negative about the opposite gender. More so, are they supposed to acknowledge that they are different? If yes, then the difference is on what grounds? Those are some of the questions in which the poet develops in the minds of the audience to create the theme of love and the difference between men and women in the matters of love. However, from my perception, I disagree with the poet because once a man finds or falls in love with a woman, they both agree and decide to either get married as live as one flesh under the same roof, for any marriage between man and woman and is ordained by God; no man can separate them but only death.
Also, the poem’s rhyme pattern structure is AA, BB. The above rhyme indicates that the ending words in the first beginning two lines rhyme with the third and fourth line. In this poem, there are two stanzas in which each contains four tracks. ’ When the men are sexually satisfied and tired with a woman, they will then look for a younger and a new woman. Moreover, from this poem, it is evident that women see men the child’s coloring book and see themselves as the novel. Women like sweet words, respect and wants her man to have only eyes for her. On the other hand, “Love in Place” is a poem that talks about its theme in a more compassionate way. It uses figurative language such as imagery to develop its theme.
Cooking can be one of the most enjoyable activities for those people who consider themselves foodies. People like this finds companionship while preparing a charming and a chance of elevating experience which can result to love. Furthermore, the idea of loving and enjoying what you do surpasses the feelings for another person. Besides, the poet uses images of smoking cigar rete, evident in line 3, “…lemon pie and when I used to smoke I stopped in the middle of my day to contemplate…” the image assist her to contemplate about her love. Perhaps, in the movies, the couples will have a smoke of cigarettes after sex. The poet has used diction whereby it has an excellent choice of words that contribute to the emotional effect of the poem. Through the choice of words, the readers can understand this poem as being compassionate, because the speaker loves cooking more than a person hence making the poem sympathetic.
In conclusion, the two poets have used imagery and diction in developing its theme. Despite having and a similar idea, they are different in one way or the other, more in the use of different styles to portray its theme. Works Cited Giovanni, N.
