Homeless in the United States
The government is responsible to ensure that every citizen has a suitable life. The delinquent is to know what caused this problem and find a solution to solve the problem which has faced many for years. Many people are homeless in most cities in the United States due to different reasons. De-institutionalization of the psychologically ill and the reduction of public amenities back in the year 1980’s is regarded as the main reason which has led to homeless. The current condition homeless people are that the number has increased due to the economic condition. The government has not introduced cheap houses which can be used by the jobless or the ones earning less. Poverty has contributed to many people to lack shelter. The section of this group is on the rise.
Some experts are defining homeless as not only the people who have no place to sleep but also living in “places not meant for human habitation” (Arnold). The increase of the homeless is becoming a major concern in the most cities within the country. Jenifer Mcfee interviewed one of the homeless people in March 2009 and said “These people, they helped me. They made me feel safe. They showed me where to go when I needed something to eat. These are really good people and they don't deserve to be shunned”. This describes a community which lives with respects to one another, they help their fellow homeless people by sharing the little they get in the day. They do not only lack health insurance but also it is hard for them to access good health care for conditions which require daily treatment like high blood pressure or heart diseases among others (Donahoe).
In a situation when the problem has progressed to late stages is when they will seek treatment which may be too late and may cause death. It has indicated that the homeless people have a high mortality rate, “to nearly four times that of the general population, their average lifespan is shorter than 45 years” (Donahoe). This is because this people lack the proper care of medication hence exposing their lives to risk. They don’t access medication regarding particular diseases at early stages hence leading to the seeking medication at late stages which may be hard for them to be healed but leads to death. Most youths will practice unprotected sex hence leading to transmission of the virus. The use of drugs has also caused to the transmission of the diseases.
The other challenge in the health sector of the homeless people is that they cannot access health insurances hence leading to access treatment due to the high cost. They usually get treatment when it's too late which leads to death. Other than that, the homeless have become a threat since it is increasing instead of decreasing. Prevention Science, 10(1), 76-86.
