HOW PORNOGRAPHY AFFECTS RELATIONSHIPS
Pornography refers to acts that end up eroding intimacy and emotional attachment for people in relationships. It creates unrealistic expectations for spouses and generally couples. Women have faced it rough with their reputation tarnished in the eyes of ruthless society which is gender insensitive and morally doesn’t appreciate the place of women in the society and at social ladder. Today there are rampant cases of assaults, sexual harassment accusations, firing of executive ladies from jobs and view women representatives in supreme courts and other senior positions. News have been dominated by the above factors which signifies how insensitive the society has grown towards respect for women as well as disregarding the place of women in matters of intimacy in relationships and emotions, (Calogero, et. As a result boys grow natured in a culture that promotes toughness, anti-feminist and also success for men.
This explicitly shows how our society has undergone moral decay in degrading women accompanied by gender insensitivity. According to, (Heflick & Jamie, pp 600), promotion of masculinity leads to overpowering men or boy to the extent that they overlook the feminine traits that naturally women have such as; empathy, tenderness, and compassion. The prevailing culture teaches the male gender how to disrespect and overlook the strength of women in all parameters; including matters of sexuality. Culture promotes hyper masculinity which over empowers boys and men generally to the extent that women don’t have space to express their opinions hence their rights and privileges can be violated without anyone questioning. This has served as the primary source for sex education for men. This insinuates that men get sex orientation through watching of pornography videos which don’t reflect the reality of matter since the videos are exaggerated.
The participants or the actors of pornographic videos are motivated to act those sex videos by money or for pay literally, (Szymanski, et, Al, pp 25). Research has shown that men move to their wives with the same mentality and orientation they acquire from sex education in pornographic videos. It is worth noting that the actual scenario when men have sex with their women is normally different from what they see in pornographic videos and materials. The inability of women to conform to expectations of their men as far as love, sex, romance and other masculine ideals are concerned, subjects women to a situation of lack of sexual identity, and sometimes deep seated humiliation which distorts physiological and psychological functioning of women. Objectification of women by men has led to the general conclusion by men that, women are objects for both admiration and male attention.
The implications of this general perception is that men end up overlooking other strong virtues women have such are intelligence, ability to assume leadership roles in different areas, and creativity. Men normally attach the primary value for women to be solely on their appearance which limits women and their ability to perform outstanding just like men can do on certain capacities, (Calogero, et. Al, pp 46). Works Cited Calogero, Rachel M. Stacey Ed Tantleff-Dunn, and J. Thompson. Self-objectification in women: Causes, consequences, and counteractions.
