The analysis will include the relation of themes such as song and religion, which are linked to culture. Most of them lack a sense of self-esteem and personal identity. In the playwright, Joe Turner aims to exemplify issues that relate to self- identity issues around the African American culture. However, he manages to amplify the distinct differences in each of the characters past and their equally different perspectives on the now urban white present. Apart from the song, religion is also a source of culture in the playwright so act as a unifying factor. For instance, it is only when they break into “juba” singing on Sunday that the whole of Joe Turner's extended family finds peace and unity (Davis). Hence one may come to the conclusion that Joe Turner's play comes and gone is focuses on the analysis of the African American culture based on the analysis of the several protagonists viewed together as one soul.

This is because the play shows the continual struggle to regain identity and individuality in the human society. Bynum Walker, who is an African conjurer, states that this is how Loomis lost his song. Which in this case is a reference to his sense of identity and self-purpose. Bynum says: “Now he’s got you bound up to where you can’t sing your own song. ” Turner hangs over Loomis present, just as much as his past and he may even be present in his future. In the play, he is a symbol of oppression and he largely appears to a force, not just an individual. Additionally, the author has also used the song in particular blue to exemplify the growth of the culture in some sort of philosophical system because he refers to it as a sense of nobility that he has never experienced among the back in Americans.

It is clear that the blues are linked to tradition, political commentary, folk philosophy, wisdom, and scared harmonies. When all these features are synchronized they represent the strength and residency in the culture of the people who have been oppressed (Davis). Notably, in the play, black Americans perceive that whiteness is linked to social prodigies and on sequentially economic power that they do not have as they lack a sense of identity and principles. Wilson’s views of the America society in the early 20th century are that people with darker skins are very disadvantaged in comparison to people with white skin. On the other hand, it also supports and is the driving force behind the struggle for freedom for African Americans in their resistance to slavery.

As a result, the bible has had powerful implications on the culture of African Americans in this new era explaining why the criticism against the word is so high. The dualism signifies a sense of double consciousness, which has attributed to the culture and tradition of the African American identity. For instance, they became slaves in the land, which is referred to as the land of the free, and some people were still regarded as somebody’s property. “I been wading in the water. It is a vivid examination of the lives of the white people as it appeared to the black Americans. In this way, the play is very captivating, dramatic and mysterious.
