Historically, melodramas were considered to be Victorian dramas where songs were utilized to support the ongoing action. However, in the modern platforms melodrama is expansively used in stage performances whereby music is not taken to be part of the events. Equally, it is depicted as a film model that is pejorative; thereby it is devoid of expansive character development. Currently, the utilization of melodrama in film production has become increasingly popular. Various researchers have shown interest to explore the high use of melodrama in film studies in recent years thereby developing several theoretical and methodological queries in regards to these developments. Different contributors propose new ways of viewing melodrama that captures its pervasiveness through diverse cultures and different genres. They investigate how it has moved and how it blends with other modes, for example, comedy and realism.
