His mission was to establish a standard knowledge of the dumpster house. Professor Wilson conducted this experiment in Austin Texas, Houston-Tillotson University. He came up with a new design for an affordable home that was solar powered. According to my personal opinion, it is right to admit that the Professor had a very brilliant idea and the way he presented the experiment was wonderful. There are very few people who would take that step and be able to downsize so fast and make it look easy just like the Professor did. In the dumpster, he managed to create a false floor where he stored some of his camping cooking equipment and any other essentials that he required. For the first six months, the Professor did not think that air conditioning was necessary.

He later realized that the installation of an air conditioner would be a good idea. He, therefore, came up with a modest system that could bring temperatures high from the 80s during the night and down from the low 100s during the day. The living conditions in the dumpster were not so good and it thus motivated him to spend more time in the neighboring community while exploring parts of East Austin. It is very interesting to learn that while this dumpster project was still going on, Professor Wilson was still teaching classes on environmental change, welfare and global. Hamblin states that “The big hypothesis we are trying to test is, can a person have a pretty good life on much, much less?” This statement notes that, an individual is able to lead a very comfortable life with only a few things that are necessary for life.

Professor Wilson was trying to help people understand that living in a very large apartment that is empty does not bring any happiness to a person. By moving out to go and live in the dumpster, the personal life of James improves and he is able to spend more of his time with the community members. James states that “I’ve been out in the community more since I have been living in the dumpster” (Hamblin). He decided to do something different from the rest of the society by using the energy he had created from natural resources. Since the dumpster is located in the University premises, there is no need for the professor to put up a toilet. If at all he had set up the dumpster on another location, a toilet would have been a necessity.

He would also need a bathroom and therefore the story of the project would have been very different. It would be unimaginable living so close to the toilet and bathroom. At night, the temperatures would fall up to eighty degrees Fahrenheit while during the day then temperatures would rise up to one hundred and thirty degrees Fahrenheit. During the day, the dumpster was comparable to an oven. Due to the oven like living conditions in the dumpster, Professor Wilson during his sixth anniversary of living in the dumpster acquired a modern air conditioner and fitted it in his dumpster house.
