Revenge in hamlet essay
He pledges to find the villain who murdered his father and pay the piper by his own music (Jones 139). However, revenge is not a simple task. Hamlet is the son who wishes vengeance and also the play’s protagonist. During his quest for vengeance, Hamlet ends up destroying himself. His revenge plan was tasked out to him by a ghost that resembled his father. His uncle hastily marries his mother, a ghost walks in the midst of the city and drunkenness and rivalry corrupts the city within. These signs are first addressed by Francisco who is said to0 be, “sick at heart” (Shakespeare p 9) Thus, the appearance of the ghost and the signs within present a state that was not right. According to Shakespeare, a chain that connects humanity should remain intact and when tampered with and breaks, the consequences are not all too well, an eruption of disorder is inevitable.
With the kings Murder that was mysterious, the chain of humanity had been broken and therefore his ghost in unrest roams the streets at night as acknowledged by Horatio (Shakespeare p69) When the ghost appears to Hamlet, the theme of appearance and reality is exemplified. His father in the form of the ghost first appears to him during a prayer. This makes Hamlet have the relevance of the appearance of the ghost which puts him in a state of sudden depression and sadness. He is made to believe that he could finally understand the concept of evil. According to religion, people should hold nobility since they are made in God’s image, however, Hamlet feels that they are just dust, therefore, they could not hold on fairness. His new found faith makes him view women in his mother’s capacity as infected and unfaithful contrary to the belief that they exude purity and innocence.
Matters concerning love reveal to him that contrary to understanding, love is not as honest nor as faithful as though to be. Shakespeare p66). By saying this Hamlet means Claudius had interfered with his chances at the throne and to show his dislike for being called, “my son” (Shakespeare p64) by Claudius. Claudius is manipulative, deceptive, and a male chauvinist. Manipulation and persuasion enforces his will on people and they end up taking up his point of view. Through manipulation he fuels Laertes hatred for Hamlet by saying to him, “Laertes, was your father dear to you? / Or are you like the painting of a sorrow, / A face without a heart?" (Shakespeare p94-96). Conclusion Briefly, in the play, Shakespeare uses comparison to induce the mind of the reader and the audience into critical thinking.
Which, creates thrill and questions in their minds such as, who was right and who was wrong and by what magnitude was either of them right or wrong in their actions (Jones 140). For example, Shakespeare compares Hamlet’s and Laertes’ revenge plots. Hamlet murdered Polonius by accident while acting on his revenge against Claudius. His accidental crime fuels anger and revenge from Laertes who conspires with the king to slay Hamlet. Hamlet and Odepius. Ed. Emanuel Berman. W. W Norton, 1949.
