She is so beautiful that aunt cannot afford to leave her when she goes on her expensive tours. Isabel was brought to Europe by her wealthy aunt, Touchett. Her Uncle leaves her half of his fortune which amounted to 70,000 pounds in 1860s. Like Isabel, James also travelled the world with his family at a young age. These teenage experiences enabled him to make a vivid description of the different lifestyles and culture showcased in the novel. James uses Ralph, one of Isabel’s suitors to explain his experience. James got an injury that stopped him from serving in the American Civil War. Ralph too had an impeccable understanding of the world.

Isabel learns that things say a lot about people and she is not as free as she thought. Characterization As much as the plot of the story depends on the mundane visits that the characters pay each other, their characterization also adds a lot to the plot. James also mixes American and British characters making it more interesting. The book is full of social satire with real characters trying to better their lives. For instance Casper Goodwood, Lord Warburton, Mr Touchett and Ralph. It is only Gilbert Osmond that is portrayed as an evil character. Conclusion James skips the events we deem essential. For example Isabel’s wedding. We only meet with her a year after her marriage. Modern Library, 1951.
