Romeo and Juliet Dialogs Explanation
Tybalt is referring to Romeo before the context Romeo had been conversing with Servingman when Tybalt discovers that Romeo had sneaked into Capulets party and he starts thinking of picking a sword to fight him. He seems to be easily irritated by this act by Romeo and the proofs that he loves hating. Capulet doesn’t seem to care much about Romeo’s presence in the party and instead, he thinks of Romeo as just an amusing kid and so Tybalt should just ignore him. The words “covered with an antic face” as per the context are used by Tybalt to refer to Romeo as covered by the mask in modern English. Tybalt thinks of Romeo as an enemy whose intention was just to mock their party. Romeo is tempted to jump in but decides to listen more, Juliet continues and says “Tis but thy name that is my enemy”.
She thinks about the meaning of their names and she is wondering why this could make them different. She thinks names should not matter instead of the person, and Romeo would still be perfect and Juliet thinks she should trade her name. Romeo then jumps out of the bush and shouts at Juliet who instantly notices his voice without having to hear his name, they had only spoken 67 words before their kiss. Juliet wonders how Romeo had gotten over the high orchard walls when Romeo tells her that it was “On the wings of love”. Romeo doesn’t seem to be interested in participating in these arguments since he recognizes Tybalt as his new wife’s cousin even though Tybalt tries to make him fight. Tybalt and Mercutio began fighting and Romeo tries to stop them unsuccessfully and in the action, Tybalt stabs Mercutio which is termed as a surprise as it wasn’t Tybalt’s intention.
Romeo and Benvolio who were in the scene seemed not to be serious about Mercutio’s injury who was badly wounded. Mercutio is furious about the fact that he was stabbed under Romeo’s arm and curses both of their families (Capulets and Montagues). Romeo is surprised about this but Mercutio proceeds to curse both of them as he says “A plague o’ both your houses!” The bolded words “I am hurt” by Mercutio means I have been hurt. Romeo had been putting out of sight at Friar’s place where Friar had been informing him about Tybalt’s state. Friar had been trying to convince Romeo view banishment in a positive aspect instead of death. He tries all possible means to make him feel embarrassed of being unthankful. Romeo is adamant and instead, he throws himself wishing that he would have been dead.
There is a knock at the door and when Friar informs Romeo that he should hide but Romeo is stubborn and refuses to hide. Juliet is not happy with that and prays for fortune to bring Romeo back to her. Before Juliet settles after the exit of Romeo, her mother gets in. They had a talk about Romeo and we notice that Juliet’s mother is very adamant and doesn’t seem to be in agreement with most of what Juliet says about Romeo, in fact, she wants Romeo to be punished for having killed Tybalt. Lady Capulet unveils the ‘good news’ to Juliet that I the next two days she (Juliet) would be married to Paris which is sharply declined by Juliet who in turn states that she would rather marry Romeo.
Capulet enters and is pleased that he had arranged a wedding for his daughter and asks Lady Capulet is she had revealed the good news to Juliet. When she asks the nurse about what she had to say about it the nurse states that Romeo was gone and marrying Paris would be a step up and Paris was a better compared to Romeo. Juliet is annoyed and thinks that everyone is against him including the nurse. She only thinks of Friar as the only hope for her and in case if Friar will not comfort him committing suicide would be her last option. The bold words in modern English: this is what I will say: Romeo is in exile and never again will he come to dare you. The greatest thing is to wed the considered one.
She then makes a decision to go to Fria’s place to seek a solution. In modern English: Well, you’ve relieved me. Go and inform my mother that I am on my way. I made father annoyed and so I want to confess to Friar to be pardoned.
