Ritualized Girling: school uniforms and the compulsory performance of gender is a peer reviewed article that discusses the manner with which the use of the school uniform policy has an impact on the gender performance especially for the girls. Happel Alison is a gender advocate who has conducted a number of studies especially in relation to the behavior of girls. Thus, she conducted this research and published the results in order to indicate to mist of the public schools the need to adopt the school uniform policy that will enable them to change the behavior of the girls and thus to achieve the intended results. By first presenting herself as a gender advocate, she shows the audience that she is the right one to stand on behalf of the girls and to offer what is appropriate and right for them. Besides, she also quotes a lot of the other material that is provided both for and against the use of the uniforms. Pathos is mainly seen when she makes an attempt to convince the audience on the need to make use of the school uniform policy. She not only focuses on the general behavior but emphasizes on the decency especially for the girls. With this, it is an indication that it is possible to uphold many other forms of characters in them. Pathos is used to a lesser extent to appeal to the emotions of those who are directly related to the uniform issue. He indicates that the school uniforms are “ridiculously outdated” and therefore do not have any benefits to the students. Therefore, he feels that they should be scrapped from the system. According to him” they are a huge expose on the families” (Abi 3). As he states, they are mainly offered as a disguise for fundraising in the schools. Moreover, he also reveals that they are ugly and uncomfortable. There is less use of ethos though it is not necessary since the author provides expert ideas to help the audience make a decision not to make use of school uniform for the benefit of the students. For instance, the idea that the uniform is outdated and uncomfortable is able to convince the reader to take up a more modern way of life that will help in the achievement of the right results. In addition, by posing the question of “do you think?” (Abi 5) the author offers the audience the opportunity to reflect on the whole issue and thus to come up with an appropriate answer to the school uniform matter.
