Serving in Florida by Barbara Ehrenreich and The Ugly Tourist by Jamaica Kincaid Analysis
The aim of this paper is to explore the how low wage workers, lack of opportunity as well as the poor condition are classified in the “Serving in Florida” by Barbara and “The Ugly Tourism” by Jamaica Ehrenreich. The people of Florida are appearing fearful of losing their employment despite of them being subjected to work in inhumane conditions for instance, the long hours as well as being deprive food at sometimes and having no break between the shift when they are working, whereby as a result the local needs, the managers employs it as a strategy to control them as they take advantage of the situation. story of Serving in Florida classifies the low income at the event where Barbara who is the main character earns her low- wage life as she lives in Florida Key west which happens to be the closest town from where she resides.
Barbara starts to find for a place where she can leave whereby she ultimately settled on a $500 per month which is not efficient to her. It is evident that in the backyard of the swamp, there is a landlord as well as a TV repairman whom they reside in a mobile home as their residence which is approximately thirty miles away from the employment opportunities which are found in the Key West. Lack of opportunity has also compelled women as well as their male counterpart not to choose the type of work, and as a result, both of them are seen working in any occupation without considering whether it belongs to a particular gender. For instance, Gall and her male friend who is hitting on her they are sharing a room in downtown which is impossible for one to cater the bills due to lack of job opportunity that will increase their low-wage income, con the other hand, Claude and his girlfriend lives together with other unrelated people and their room is crowded (Ehrenreich, 154).
Furthermore, concerning Jamaica the neocolonial which was better known as the tourist was not only an ugly thing to be with, but also their job was fetching the low amount of income thus translating to people with low-wage in the society. The neocolonial ideology is altered at some point whereby the Kincaid not only attacks the western colonizers but also revealed to the people who reside in the Antigua where pauper of the local people in the society would clash with the wealth due to the low-wages. In the light of Low-wage income appears that tourism was the activity that would be easy to those countries that are industrialized and more globally to the privileged elite which comprises the people living in the societies that are wealthy, and thus tourism depicts the low wage income to the rest of the people.
Working poor cannot allow themselves the luxury of going to foreign land as tourist because the average Antiguans would travel since his family and his life depends on it but not because of recreation. Also, for every native lives a life of boredom and depression as well as the separation and every endeavor of good or evil is an attempt to forget the past (Kincaid’s, 201).
