Should homosexuality be legalized
Scientists have not really established the actual determinants of sexual orientations in human beings. However, there is some speculation that genetics, hormones and the environment may influence sexual orientations. Some societies have embraced the idea of homosexuality, while others have rebuked it in the strongest terms possible. Each of these societies has their own arguments to back up their claims. The main argument against gays’ is that it is a practice that is not only morally derailing but also goes against the doctrines of most religions and cultures. This Italian gentleman was considered as one of the most talented and influential individuals in human history he was an engineer, an inventor, a polymath, a painter, an architect, a mathematician, an anatomist, a botanist, and a writer. As a renaissance man, Da Vinci’s ideologies are still applied in many ways today, despite him being gay.
The LGBTQ community has expanded and amassed quite much publicity over the last few years. This has been aided by the hate crimes which have recently been committed against them. All over the world, members of the LGBTQ community are treated differently. This is a theory which has been proven beyond doubt by medical practitioners and other researchers concerned in this field (Carbado, 309). Sexual orientation is therefore beyond the control of most of these individuals. Medical researchers have also established that sexual behaviors are very hard to change and control. This, therefore, means that if an individual is born as a homosexual, then the possibility of them converting to either heterosexual or bisexual is very little. In this case, in order to accommodate these individuals in society, homosexuality should be legalized.
Some cultural practices are very opposed to homosexuality. In some cultures, for instance, among Muslims, homosexuality is an abomination. There have been some reports of some gay people being stoned to death in some Islamic states (Anand, 155). In such societies, it would be of little help to legalize homosexuality. In Christianity, the bible is very clear about sexual relations with members of the same sex. The United States, an example of a society which has legalized homosexuality is leading in such cases. More than 15% of reported rape cases today are gay rapes. This figure has been on a rising trend for the past few years. This means that legalizing homosexuality in a way encourages gay related sexual crimes. Technically, it is easier for a rape suspect to get away with it in a state that approves gay rights than in a state that does not approve of gay rights.
Weakness of the argument As much as this argument presents some facts, it overlooks others. For instance, it does not consider that any sexual activity, may it be hetero or homo puts one at a health risk. STIs do not only affect gay people. In fact, straight people are more likely to contract an illness as compared to gay people. Medical evidence also suggests that gay people are mentally stable and can be regarded as normal people.
