Smoking on campus is a controversial issue since not everyone in campus smokes and smoking is not illegal in many countries bearing in mind that most of the students and working staff are considered to be adults. Smoking in college, however, litters the environment, pollutes the air, and has adverse medical effects to the primary and secondary smokers (Zhao et al. Despite the various views that exist concerning smoking on the campus, I believe that smoking on the university should be banned for safety, environmental and health purposes. People who oppose the banning of cigarettes on campus cite the fact that smoking is legal in the country. This is likely to have an impact on the revenue of the cigarette companies and the taxes that they pay to the government. In 2017, for example, the tobacco industries in the United States generated tax revenue of $13. billion. The cigar companies may also not be stretched to take part in the corporate responsibility and sustainability programs as it should. What this means is such individuals will have to dispose of at least 24 filters in a day bearing in mind that there are different types of litter to be expelled by the student. Most of the cigarette smokers are not responsible enough to use the litter bins as it has been established. Most of them typically throw the used cigarette filters on the pathways which litter the university and give the people responsible for cleaning a hard time.

Smoking in the university not only affects the smokers alone but those who are within the university premises as well (Braverman et al. The primary smokers are the individuals who first smoke the cigars through the filter and release the smoke only to be inhaled by the other people in the vicinity. However, there are concerns that the disgusting and annoying cigarette smell does not go away immediately which means that while in class the non-smokers are likely to be affected. The cigarette smoke is expected to mix with other pollutants and find itself in the university environment which means that this move will not entirely protect the non-smokers (Braverman et al. The proponents of the argument also suggest that other than the cigarette, coffee too contains nicotine. Students who need an adrenaline spike in their system especially during the cold months should take coffee instead of cigarettes because coffee has plenty of health benefits.
