Should the Second Amendment be Amended or not

Throughout the years, firearms have been incorporated into the American culture as security measures and an effective way of sports or hunting. America is recognized as the world most well-armed country, but the main reason why most Americans own guns is due to the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, which asserts that "The right of the people to have and keep arms, shall not be infringed. Recently, there has been a debate over the interpretation of the Second Amendment with the supporters arguing that gun possession is an individual's constitutional right against the critics who believe that gun control laws should be enacted (Ruben 149). The gun control activists persist in challenging this right claiming that, guns are responsible of the increased rates of violent crimes. But in contrary, guns are not the issue but the civilians who use them.

Following the terms agreed upon by the founding fathers, the American citizens have a right to provide security to themselves as well as their families by using handguns against threats that can imperil their life. The Americans enjoyed the benefits associated with owning guns for many years over citizens in other nations; they could obtain and carry the weapons around with them in public without any restrictions from the authority. But recently the issue of Americans carrying and using guns has raised significant concerns and problems prompting the U. S Government to instill laws controlling gun ownership. Currently, the debate surrounding the firearm ownership regulation laws is because of the countless tragedies which have been linked to the use of guns. Therefore, the Amendment should be enforced, and neither the Federal nor the state government should have the mandate to restrict firearm ownership.

The objective of the governments should be to serve the needs of the general public and follow the constitution accordingly. The rights of the citizens should not be infringed. Additionally, gun control laws would only subject the ordinary American citizen to unfair treatment by the nation’s police force unit. If the citizens were denied the right to own guns, the country's police force would take the advantage by using their arms to control the citizens in case of civil crisis. For example, gun violence in the United States claims the lives of over 40,000 and injures approximately 70,000 people annually. Therefore firearms can be mishandled and abused, and thus the need to control gun ownership (Arrigo et al. However, a recent gun shooting incident that occurred at a high school in Florida, which left numerous fatalities, indicated the urgent need to impose strict laws concerning gun possession in America.

Gun control advocates also argue that with the evolution of technology, guns have turned out to be a social impediment instead of the protection they were intended to be. However, refuting the significant counterarguments that gun control can make the American society safer and reduce the crime rates is that, armed citizens can bravely deal with a criminal thus enhancing their sense of security.
