A research done by PEW Research Center indicates that at least 67% of people owning smartphones have admitted to constantly looking at their smartphone for either calls or messages if the phone has been silent for a long time (Zhou, 2017). This is a big sign of mobile smartphone over-dependence thus a warning to those owning cell phones. Using the web, the world has become like a global village. Research is still ongoing to come up with more advanced features for the phones hence broaden the market share. Marketers are coming up with creative marketing skills making people get glued to their phones. They get pressured to write more articles in future leading to addiction. The presence of the internet, social media makes the addiction for smartphones increase (Zhou, 2017). Each individual in the world has a certain group or tribe they belong to.
We resist from being alone and want to be identified by the tribe. There is always the urge to do what all the other members are doing Effects of smartphone addiction There a number of effects which result from smartphone addiction. Neck problems is also an effect of smartphone addiction. The neck pain that results from looking down at a cell phone or at a table for a very long time, this is also referred to as "text neck". v. Diseases due to germs is a smartphone addiction that results in an average 1 in every 6 smartphones has particles of faeces. Mobile phones are said to be containing Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Smartphone addiction is linked to sleep disorders and fatigue in users. The use of smartphones before bed increases the likelihood of insomnia.
The light that is emitted from a smartphone from the smartphone may activate the brain Rapeepisarn, (2016) states the following as the symptoms of smartphone addiction. i. An individual can know is addicted to smartphones if the following symptoms are evident in the daily activities. vii. Feeling uneasy when you are without your smartphone even for a short while. viii. Taking meals with your smartphone being part of the table place setting. ix. Uninstalling unnecessary apps on your phone. By doing this, it will help addicted individuals to remove the clutter from the smartphone and be able to reduce the time that is spent in exploring the phone apps (Wibirama, 2017). iii. Turning off the smartphone before going to bed. This will help addicted individuals to stop checking their smartphone even in the middle of the night thus reducing the amount of time spent on the phone.
It is important to reply to messages once in the morning, once at around noon and lastly once in the evening. By doing this it will save time and be able to prevent checking the phone for the messages that need to be replied to (Wibirama, 2017). vii. Using an actual clock for alarm purposes. Seemingly everyone uses their smartphone as an alarm, changing this can make a difference and thus overcome smartphone addiction. Ariwibowo, A.
