The Effectiveness of Teaching Methods
It opens numerous opportunities related to business and employment to people who learn how to read, write and speak it fluently. Speaking English is one of the significant skills of effective communication in the world. However, teaching English as a second language remains a challenge due to the inability to determine the most effective teaching method. Several studies have highlighted the need to change the focus of methods of teaching ESL from a teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach. This study aims at investigating a group of Russian Students in ESL class under two different methods of instructions that is, video and normal method (Instructor in class). The question of what method to use to teach English as a second language has long characterized various studies. Abramova, Ananyina, & Shishmolina (99) explored the challenges that occur because the teaching of English is done by non-native instructors in the classic ‘teacher-textbook-student' paradigm.
Abramova et al. goes ahead to highlight the importance of shifting from the traditional teacher-centered approach to the EFL teaching and learning process to create a student-centered environment. He further suggests that teaching students using video may be seen as one of the most effective measures in expanding the learning opportunities of the students and countering some of the weaknesses associated with the environment of artificial English teaching. This article is significant to the topic as it suggests the need to shift the current teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach in teaching. To develop Russian students with strong English skills, it is important to look into methods of promoting speaking skills at the elementary level. It is also noted that most Russian students face difficulties in communicating fluently in English (Morozova).
Morozova states that the main reason behind poor speaking skills among Russian students is their lack of determination to communicate because of various factors. From the study, one's way to communicate plays an important role in second language acquisition. The fifth involves assigning the role, and the final step involves following up in order to ensure that it goes as stipulated. It is clear various difficulties make learning a second language a difficult task to accomplish. It is therefore important to come up with innovative measures that can help in fighting the challenges. Such actions are anticipated to help in making learning English as a second language an easy task, especially for Russians. This study will be important in validating how the use of video in instrumentation helps in improving the academic performance of the students.
The N size will be forty, which will be backed by the fact that international students are usually a smaller population and there will be the need for a sample. Materials and Procedure This experiment will involve instructing the participants in the two different methods, and coming up with an examination to validate the influence of the particular methods on performance. A questionnaire will also be used to gather information concerning the feelings of students with the particular adopted. The questions in the examination will be about the content delivered in the course of teaching and will be similar to both groups. General observations will be done in the course of the study to gather direct information regarding attitudes of the students as well as the receptivity. Discussion The findings might have massive significance to broader literature.
If the results show that use of video in instruction has a higher chance of bettering performance the performance of students in comparison to plain instruction, such results will thus comply with those of (Kodotchigova); and (Birova) regarding the use of visuals in English as second language instruction. Such findings will also be important in fighting various challenges as stated by (Abramova, Ananyina, &Shishmolina, 101). Various approaches can thus be amended as stated by (Morozova) and (Sysoyev 20). Potential limitations As pertains to limitations, the study may lack adequate population because it targets foreign students, and may affect the reliability of the results.
