The evil within The nature of evil
Natural evil generally is a terrible situation that doesn't come about because of the aims or even carelessness of moral specialists. They include natural disasters such as floods and famines among others. Moral evil, on the other hand, is due to the aims and carelessness of moral specialists. Human beings willingly do moral evils such as rape, murder or lying. Moral evils are the most common evils in our societies today (Sias, 2016). Manipulative people make other people do things that they actually are not willing to do leading to negative consequences at the end. What’s more, evil people tend to lack a moral compass and thus they do whatever they want and fail to take responsibility for their actions or the pain they have caused other people. Evil people don’t have any kind of remorse and thus they feel sorry for no one they have caused pain to.
What’s more, they are constantly lying as a way of expressing themselves and gain something from it at the cost of the other person. They mislead other people by twisting the truth to their advantage and never care about the damage they cause to other people. Thus, the husband, in this case, is abusive and controlling which could make be considered to be an evil person. He does not even want his wife appreciating gifts from other people for the simple reason that he is jealous and goes ahead and murders the wife simply for blushing at other people. Jealousy is demonstrated when the speaker says, “Sir, ’twas not Her husband’s presence only, called that spot Of joy into the Duchess’ cheek” (lines 13-15). The actions of the Duke are pure evil.
Similarly, Oates (1966) demonstrates the nature of evil through the character Arnold Friend who uses sexually explicit and violent language towards Connie. Poor people are associated with high crime rates as compared to the people of higher economic status. Greed, selfishness, and lust are other sources of evil in our society (Ritter, 2018). Greedy people can do anything, including causing harm to others just to get what they want. The influence of drug and substance abuse also increases the levels of evil in the society most especially among the young generation. Under the influence of drugs, people commit all sorts of crimes including murder, rape, robbery, and violence among others. Just like Arnold Friend makes Connie suffer in Oates story, “where are you going, where have you been,” innocent people will jeep suffering in the hands of evil people.
The main causes of such high levels of evil include poverty, greed, selfishness, lust, culture or even the media, and also drug and substance abuse among others. Generally, there is the need to look for alternatives to minimize the evils in our societies today to reduce the damage being done to innocent people. References Browning R. My Last Duchess.
