The impact of community service on my personal and professional development
For me, being involved in community service molded me into a strong person and changed my perspective towards the alleviation of human suffering. High school provides a good chance for both seniors and freshmen to try new things. Of these endeavors is volunteering involvements as a prudent way of spending time. Even though volunteering does not pay for other job activities do, it brings forth several future benefits. Some of these benefits cannot be found in a normal job set up. In my course of community service, I have encountered several challenges facing the community. This exposure to realities helps me to critically think of ways to alleviate human suffering as well as seek practical remedies. For instance, being involved in first aid team in high school fashioned my passion to care for the suffering especially the terminally ill.
In fact, community service has greatly molded my perspective concerning the terminally ill in the society. Certainly, the contentment I receive when I create a smile in a weary soul is inspirational. I also discovered my passion in seeking social justice. Other key skills that I have gathering is communication skills. Logically, you need to understand and clearly communicate with a person in need before volunteering to help. Clearly, volunteering in community service activities has also helped in my professional development. Some of the key skills I gained in the course of community service involvement play an important role in landing an employment opportunity. Cultural background and Diversity. The diversity of cultures is an inevitable phenomenon in the contemporary world. In my interactions with people during the community service activities, I encounter different people from diverse cultures.
The diversity range from culture, religion, ethnic groups, race etc. At times, people disagree on bases of these diversities. My participation in community service activities helped me to understand that diversity of cultures is what makes us humane. In fact, if all cultures were identical, the world would have missed a very important aspect that unifies people. Human beings are naturally social beings and socialization is inspired by diversity. Different cultures inspire people to produce and consume different goods and services. Some cultures are well endowed with skills and knowledge that favor production of a particular product. Socializing with people of different cultures may be hectic at times. It may put pressure on your mental health as well as your general wellbeing.
When faced with difficult situations to handle, teamwork plays a key role to remedy the situation. The difficult diversity to deal with is religious beliefs. Faith by nature is absolute and hard to adjust according to situations. As a rule, I have learned to ask where I am in doubt and I always apologize when I offend anyone. This makes me enhance my cultural awareness and tolerance. The same spirit will go a long way in integrating diverse cultures at UNT campus since it is also comprised of people from diverse cultures. To conclude, cultural diversity is a sensitive area that has potential to cause either conflict or unity. Therefore, it is the responsibility of everyone to enhance a peaceful coexistence in a world full of diversities.
In particular, I experienced serious challenges at first in comprehending lectures delivered in English and also in arithmetic. I had to endure cultural diversities from time to time ever since I began my education. For instance, in college, I had to put up with somehow absurd lifestyle since lecturers appeared to care less whether one understands or not. However, having been raised from a tough and poverty-stricken family, I know I have to work extremely hard to make ends meet in the near future. All my educational journey has been marred by serious challenges in raising school fees. It was a great achievement for me to make it to college, although I was clueless on how to go through the first semester.
I knew I was ending the right path towards reaching my future goals, but financial challenges were the only major limitation I had no power to conquer at the time. However, a splendid idea crossed my mind and I thought I could grab this opportunity on time before the situation worsened. I applied for the MSA Scholarship hoping against hope that my situation was bound to permanently change and revive my dreams which were crushing out day by day. After joining college I have always applied for several scholarship programs, but all in vain. I was once in the same situation and unhappy in life. Therefore, I am more than willing, in future, to help them realize their full potential and be productive members of the society for the betterment of the human race.
Additional information to the selection committee Having a vast experience in community service as a member of first aid team in high school, I believe I am qualified for the MSA Scholarship. I have also volunteered at several community-based organizations and gained wonderful experience. I can profess that I have the humane heart in me and I receive a great satisfaction when engaging in community service activities. This, I believe is a prudent step in achieving leadership competence. Being raised from a poor background, I have learned that just like wine, focused people get better day by day. In fact, I am focused as a laser beam. For the less privileged persons in the society to succeed, giving up is never an option.
