The Lesson Literary Analysis
It focuses on Miss Moore’s attempt to show the kids on her block that if they take advantage of opportunities, they can be successful and break the trend of poverty. In “The Lesson”, the author is trying to get us to look at the problem of economic injustice and is showing us how if we start young we can fix this problem of unfairness towards the poor. Thinking outside of the story itself, the story is trying to get us to look at Economic Justice. The main setting of the story is the toy store where the kids see expensive toys that they cannot afford. This does exactly what she plans it will do. First of all, it mentions she went to college. Her goal is to do all she can to encourage these kids to do the same.
She wants to see that generation do more and this is her way of doing that. I believe that she is an example, in a sense of what we can do in poor areas. We need not give them money, but rather give them what they need to succeed on their own. Unfortunately, people are born into situations they can’t control. If you are born into a family that doesn’t have money, your options are suddenly limited. They walk into a store and the prices are beyond anything they would ever dream of paying. I believe that the greater message is that despite the prices being so high, with proper education and work ethic they can reach those heights. I believe that part of your wealth is determined by the family in which you are born but Miss Moore is trying to break that trend and have these kids do something for themselves to change their lives.
” She is an outsider to them and the consequences of this are a bad attitude towards her. In every narrative, characters develop. I believe that Sylvia develops throughout the story. In the beginning we can see she has a very bad attitude about everything. The story even begins with a comment about everyone being “old and stupid or young and foolish and me and Sugar were the only ones just right. But aint nobody gonna beat me at nuthin. ” This is her final change. She charges herself to be the best at everything she can do. One interesting part of this story is the point of view in which it is written. It is from the view of Sylvia. First of all, democracy does not promise equal chance to pursue happiness.
Democracy promises equal representation in a government. Democracy means everyone gets an equal vote in executive decisions. It does not mean that everyone gets “an equal crack at the dough”. This line in the story is supposed to be the “punch line” of the story. Economic will always be a problem in the world and has been a problem since the world has been made. This story is in an attempt to get people to try to fix the problem of Social Justice and I believe it is a good example of such an initiative. Works Cited Bambara, Toni C. The Lesson. N.
