It was due to the book that made him awarded at the Angouleme International Comic festival held in 1993 for the best comic book (Beaty & Benjamin, 17). The book is considered a postmodern novel with a story of the different narrative of history, psychological and autobiographical. It reveals various postmodern techniques of literary dices uses. Here there is the use of animals to symbolize human being. For instance, Jews are seen as mice while the Germans as cats while the poles as pigs. For instance, white people have been painted white on their face together with their hands. However, people that are black have a black strip of lines on their body, while others are also painted black on their skin and having won black clothes. Through the book, one can easily differentiate people from different races just by looking at the image of the animal.

The argument between Spiegelman and Francoise also expresses the theme of racism. There is a tough argent when Francoise indicates that he would pick a black person “Shwartser. The Jews are presented as the mice, Nazis as cats while the French as revealed as the Frogs. This is racisms showing the might each has on the other. For this case, the Jews are seen to be the weaker ones as the Nazis can eat them in any time. The choice of this animals is s depicting the hierarchy available in the animal kingdom or the sociocultural associated with them (Loman 570). The Nazis are the most proponents of racism in the novel while the poles are seen to be bad in many instances in Maus. They saw themselves as superior while other people such as the Nazi’s to be inferior which was a threat to the German racial community.

This issue has also dominated in the story with the poles and the Jews overlooking most of the story. The Jews have been seen to be complying with the rules of the Nazis while other acts as the soldiers for the Nazis. The story is about what Art went through during the Holocaust. The theme of racism is seen almost everywhere in the novel. Instances revealed by Spiegelman are very many in the novel concerning racism. The are many instances where poles risked their lives saving the lives of the Jews from angry Nazi's. Even from the images of the picture of the Jews shows how they carry the Jews. From the direct quote seen from the book shows how they carry they are seen other than being human beings. A good instance is when some of the guards are matching over the workshop they are not seen as men.

The author uses some of the previous scenes to show how the Jews were entirely innocent of racism and not the Germans. Vladek shows how he fears the black people who are also the same as the way polish are viewed. During the Holocaust, the Jews were feared a lot. The poles feared the Jews due to their experiences in the Holocaust. Vladek had a full experience with the black people making him fear them a lot. There a dramatic decline in the culture of Poland.
