There Should Be Monitored Use of the Internet Technology
This poses a very big challenge because it is hard to control what a person is accessing on the internet or with whom they are interacting with. In addition, it may prove a bit difficult to apprehend bullies on the internet because many use pseudo names. There are many dangers of young minds being pre-exposed to cyberbullying and only proper monitoring of internet use via communication devices can assist to control this scourge. It is the duty of parents or guardians to be on the look for behavioral changes in their children and create an open-talk environment where children can feel free to open up if experiencing bullying. Similarly, teachers can also help by means like teaching ethical use of the internet. This leaves victims feeling like they are tossed into a deep pit full of slander, flaming, harassment and threats that they cannot crawl out of.
It is worth noting that cyberbullying, unlike face to face bullying, is more complex because the bully is not known and the bullying can potentially become viral due to the use of the internet. The adverse implications of cyberbullying on the victim’s life are more far-reaching. Therefore, the relevant authorities, including the government, teachers as well as parents ought to tackle this menace with a lot of zeal. This paper seeks to outline the dangers of cyberbullying and provide a feasible and realistic proposition to curb this menace in our learning institutions as well as at home. • Encourage children to immediately report any incidences of cyberbullying and not to engage in further communication with the said bully. • Clearly set guidelines on what is the responsible online usage as well as indicate the repercussions of violating the guidelines.
• Hold regular conversations with your child to know the online activities that he/she is engaged in and offer some guidance. Although the students’ right entitled in the First Amendment is a big hindrance in dealing with cyberbullying cases in schools, certain policies can be put in place to tackle this menace (National Education Association). The First Amendment avails to each individual the right to freedom of speech. Alternative Solution Some parents may argue that these communications devices might as well be prohibited in learning institutions to do away with the cyberbullying altogether. I understand where this thought might come from considering that most parents are skeptical of the notion of having telecommunication devices in schools. However, as emphasized by the National Education Association, these devices have a great capacity to improve student’s learning if their use is well managed.
Technology is here to stay and to help society better their lives. This applies also to the learning institutions where technology can be properly utilized to avail the wonders of information to learners as well as their instructors. However, this process is worth every penny if we care about the well-being of our children at home, in school and other public places. Failure to address this catastrophic, ticking time bomb may lead to dozens of students living with depression or worse committing heinous crimes against others in society in retribution.
