there were a total of 8,124 gun homicides in 2014; which makes gun homicides as common as a car crash in the U. S. excluding van, truck, motorcycle or bus accidents (Quealy & Sanger-Katz, 2016). Without gun reform, these unfortunate attacks on Americans on American soil by Americans will continue to happen because nothing is being done to change it. Americans cannot even talk about solutions to prevent yet another mass shooting, another unnecessary murder, or any other type of gun violence, is becoming a social justice issue. Distinctive of social approach and geographic contrasts, diverse nations have distinct directives and strategies on gun proprietorship control. This paper aims at arguing on gun violence in terms of usage of guns, whether for protection or weapons for dealing with malicious activities. In the contemporary world, there remain yet various perspectives on whether weapon proprietorship ought to be sanctioned or restricted in public.
A common disputation is that owning a gun stands as an indisputable requirement for the purpose of protection. In any case, gun opponents regarding proprietorship guarantee that the forbidding of gun possession stays vital to bring down the rate of gun violence. At the point a likely casualty stays defenceless it would be a support to equipped lawbreakers (Cohen et al 551-567). Accordingly, authorizing weapon possession can just enable natives to ensure their and others life remain safeguarded. Despite that stands numerous laws limiting the ownership and use of guns, a number of candid proponents regarding gun proprietorship contend that the general population's entitlement to keep as well as remain battle ready should not be abused. Besides, weapon rights remain like self-protection rights; a gun ban would be a noteworthy infringement of the self-protection liberties.
Along these lines, once somebody stays denied of their important right to possess weapons, they have no ideal approach of self-protection. It is said that the student had been expelled from the school due to indiscipline cases. The shooter used the hall way and took advantage of the commotion of several students who were trying to escape. The students did not understand whether it was a real shootout or a drill since the school had organized a fire drill that fateful morning. The incident led to the loss of 17 lives and several others injured. This incident is one of the many more shooting which have happen in various learning institutions. by not standing up to gun advocates, and the NRA are arming American citizens with a gun capable of devastation, in the name of sports, hunting, or protection.
In fact, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was accused by the NRA for promoting gun control and threated to be stripped of it’s funding by the Republican-majority Congress if it continued to fund research into firearm injuries and deaths, which resulted in the halting of any research into the issue in 1996 (Frankel, 2017). Just focusing the studies to mass shootings between 2009 and mid-2015, Everytown for Gun Safety (EGS) could discern patterns; for instance, only 11% of these cases were found to have any signs of the gunmen suffering from mental illnesses, less than one-third of these shootings were in public spaces, and more than two-thirds of these gunmen were allowed to possess gun regardless of prior felonies (LaFraniere, et. al, 2015). Within these numbers alone, the argument that irresponsible gun owners are those that suffer from a mental illness falls away when only 11% have been found to have any inkling of mental illness prior to the shooting.
Factors contributing to gun violence Every government needs to have a clear understanding of the factors that lead to firearm attack. The causes may include substance abuse and the gang, gun availability and accessibility, unemployment and illegal firearm markets. The use of substance abuse and gang groups has a direct link to gun violence. Young people use firearms in gang group to attack people and drugging them especially women in incidences of rape. According to (Brown, Osterman, & Barnes, 2009) having a firearm is an honor.
The authors in their study found that there is a significant relationship between the weapons carried to school and the frequency of shootings in schools. In addition, in their study, they found that there is a variation between the United States regions having high attributes towards carrying a gun in Northern and Eastern state. Many in-depth researches need to be done on how public health will be incorporated in reducing mortality and morbidity rates during gunfire incidences. In addition, appropriate measures need to be developed on how to take care of gunfire attack victims at the scene as many of them succumb to pain because of lack of immediate attention. The victims especially those ones who were attacked in school are affected psychologically as they develop a negative attitude towards school and as a result their performances are affected.
The parents also get hard times thinking whether their children are safe in school. This increased tension affects the education sector as a whole. It is true that most of the gunfire attacks occur in social places like schools, restaurants and play theatres where young people gather. The attacks come the least expected time since individuals are occupied with activities. In addition, the streets are considered as target place for gun violence. Schools are densely populated with people involved in different activities hence making the gunfire attacks a severe threat.
