Why College Students are in Debt Introduction There are many issues that the Trump administration is yet to address; they range from foreign policy and international trade decisions. However, there is one area that directly affects economic position of the majority Americans. This area is public education, and it should be given special attention. The successive United States governments have always addressed college funding amicably but Trump seems to be getting it wrong. It is not ethical to entirely blame Trump for the crisis since he inherited a skewed system. However, he will have to shoulder the blame because he is the one running the show currently.

Some of the policies being fronted by the current administration have little impact in driving the anticipated reforms (Ross 45). For instance, Trump’s Education Secretary Betsy DeVos lacks the technical ability to run public education sector. Ross writes that “DeVos has as much experience with the challenges of paying for higher education as she does with supporting public schools. They then chose to dedicate their finances in servicing their loans to make them eligible to qualify for other loan products. “Student debt is a significant burden on families and a serious drag on our economy” (Ross 45). When families use huge amount of their income to repay their education loans, they miss opportunities to invest in viable investment ventures. The national economy will remain stagnant since the economic growth depends on investment initiatives.

Therefore, it is now evident that economic growth is proportionally dependent on the rate, uptake, and repayment of student loans. Some stakeholders’ blame the crisis on the high interests’ rates while others calls for the revision of eligibility requirements. Republicans are being blamed for blocking reform measures in the sector (Ross 45). Ross claims that “Yet the Republicans who control the legislature have refused to allow even an up-or-down vote on Democratic-backed bills to allow state-based refinancing. ” They use their numerical muscles to shut down progressive legislations that seek to compel the federal government to repay part of the student debt. The democrat-backed Bills have proposed liner solutions to end the crises but their efforts do not pass beyond the Senate. A significant number of students from the people of color families lack proper income generating opportunities.

This makes them to apply for college loans hoping that they will be able to repay the debt upon graduating. After graduation, they find it hard to secure jobs offering competitive wages thus they end up failing to refinance the loans. This case is not only special to the African Americans; a significant number of white families are also affected thus making the crisis a national matter. Failure to pay the student loan as stipulated in the agreement attracts severe penalties. Students deserve affordable loans to see them through college thus it is also important to measure their performance over the four academic years they spend in college (Katz). Some scholars argue that the student loan crises can be blamed on the commercialization of education.

Universities and tertiary learning institutions have capitalized on the increase of college loan facilities and rising demand to transform learning institutions into commercial centers. Katz writes that “The next logical truism is that if we are to create an assessment culture in higher education, we must convince the faculty to support systemic assessment across the four years of college. ” This begs the question on whether the government should prioritize assessment of colleges before addressing the student loan crisis. Academic consumerism has been blamed for the drop of educational standards thus the need to evaluate the learning outcomes. The faculties have developed an attitude of valuing the number of students as opposed to the available resources and the quality of education offered by the university.
