Anorexia nervosa analysis
Document Type:Coursework
Subject Area:Business
The report is a case of a 12-year-old female named Catrina and lives in Chicago with her parents. Her mother brought her to the hospital after she noticed that Catrina had an increase in weight loss and growing resistance to appropriate eating habits. She was diagnosed with Anorexia soon after she visited the hospital, it's been two years since Catrina has been clinically diagnosed. She said that "food made her anxious. " Catrina's personality and diagnosis greatly intrigued me; she was chosen for this case study. Upon assessment, it was discovered that she had drastically reduced in weight by 12 pounds as compared to her recent weight (Kristina, 2013). Catrina was asked to drink to boost nutritional supplements at the emergency department until Catrina was able to follow up with a therapist in the eating disorders unit.
She was then advised to take six boosters per day, but Catrina refused to follow this suggestion. Catrina started losing weight, and at some point, she had experienced panic attacks in which Catrina described as breathing rapidly and increased heart rate. When I met with Catrina, I noticed that she was physically okay and healthy, unlike before when she was not following strict meal plans when she was very thin in appearance, fatigued, and falling hair. Catrina answers questions appropriately and smiles; she maintains eye contact this demonstrates the ability to stay focused when talking to someone. Catrina is happy and shy with an amazing personality. She sits quietly folding her hands, and when addressed, she listens. She has the right attitude and is very obedient because she follows the rules without rolling eyes (lavender, et al, 2015.
The way she walks and sits is modest and polite. When asked about food and eating behaviors and what she thought about the food, she stated that it was very hard for her to focus on nutritional labels and the number of calories that she has eaten (Zipfel, et al, 2015). She said that it was something that was on her mind all the time. This proved that she was obsessed with eating behavior because it occupies her mind all the time. Catrina projects to be a fun loving attitude happy and always smiling and jokes well with other girls. This is different when she is in her therapy sessions, where she says openly that she is tired, overwhelmed, and anxious. Social and cultural issues Catrina told me of an instance of when she was bullied in school.
She was under medication that gradually increased her weight by 16 pounds. When she went to school after getting better. Her school mates always commented about her weight and making fun of her. She stated that she at times skipped school, but her mother did not get to know (Byrne, et al, 2017). She was a young girl and was in an age group, which is most important to develop in adolescents. Anorexia is more common in modeling and dance students than in other women of the same social class and age. People who their main focus is their body size have a higher chance of developing anorexia. Also, there are certain roles that consider the thinness of a woman (Kristina, 2013). Such roles make women want to change their bodies to fit the role.
They only mentioned diseases are common in the family but did not mention any kind of mental illness. I would like to know if Catarina had a certain way that she did her things. Many people with anorexia report that children felt that there was one right way to do something. How social is Catrina is another thing I would love to know. If she spends the most time with her friends or is it only when need be is when she gets to socialize with others. Are they helping her through the process, or are they discouraging her? I would love to know how Catrina feels about her situation and if she can be more free with her parents so that they will be able to walk with her through the whole process and if it is possible for her to tell them what made a start poor eating habits.
I would also like to know how she feels about society, and if she had a chance to change the perception the society has on overweight women to be specific, what her change will be. How she performs in school and what her peers say or think about her thin body and how she relates with her teachers and who is her favorite and why the teacher is her favorite. If she is part of any club in school and why she joined the club Treatment plan The main goal when treating anorexia nervosa is to help the person to gain weight for them to avoid medical complications, and the second goal is how the individual will be able to maintain the weight gain process.
In general, it is done using a team approach, which includes the collaboration of doctors, mental health professionals, and dietitians and anyone else with experience in eating disorders. CBT can reduce the risk of the individual relapsing and other symptoms related to eating disorder if it is combined with hospital treatment (westmoreland, et al, 2016). Other ways of treating eating disorders involve prevention by creating awareness to children and adults about anorexia, which will help them, resist sociocultural pressures and how they can identify with people with risk factors. For Catarina case, I would recommend the FBT method because apart from helping Catarina recover, it will help her improve the relationship between her and her parents. She will recover better with the care of her parents.
